MSD Digital 6
Went to go for a ride this weekend and for the first time ever my car wouldn't start!!! Long story short, no spark (even though I drove the car into the garage and parked it just a few weeks ago). Power to the ignition, distibutor turns, MSD powers up (red light) all wires tight and clean.
Bad coil or bad box? Went througth the MSD trouble shooting, couln't get an ark out of the coil when manualy triggering the ignition... Now I'm questioning the reliability of the MSD Digital 6?? Any comments? |
If it's an MSD dist and cap, check and see if the carbon ball that contacts the rotor is still in place.
There have been issues with them |
MSD Distributor and the ball is intact.

Use an Ohm meter and check the magnetic pickup in the distributor for the values stated: If this is Correct then check with an alternate coil, lastly remove the box and have it checked. |
my money is on the pick up in the distributor

Rick,
Thanks for the info, I will check the reading tomorrow. I just assumed the magnetic trigger was pretty much bullet proof... I had heard a few comments on the Digital series leaving a few people stranded in the past. I personally have never had a coil or trigger fail, but have experienced an ignition module/box to fail. |
Speaking from experience, double check the ground.. :)
|
400 to 1000 on the magnetic pick-up ohms, they usually fail with open windings.

I'm using the digital 6, so far (5 or 6 years ) no trouble. Distributor is the msd ready to run, coil is the epoxy filled msd blaster 2

I had an MSD dist pickup go bad on me once. Fortunately, I have the dual pickup dist and just plugged the other one in.

Bad pickup, couldn't get any ohm reading at all... $28 later I'm back on the road, I will throw a spare pickup in the trunk...
Thanks for everyones input. |
