Air Filter Recommends

1 Attachment(s)
Guys,
I know that there are plenty of threads about air cleaners, but this is what I have. Seems like lots of people think the AC is too small. Functional hood scoop, as you can see. Motor is an aluminum-block / head Shelby 482. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

Michael, I hunted for, but could not find, a nice article that was posted, I believe, on an SPF site, and that was referenced by me on this forum several times. Unfortunately I couldn't find it. I hate it when that happens. But the long and the short of it was that it compared typical FEs both with and without Turkey Pans and with and without the different types of air cleaners and air filters. The bottom line was that if you are going to keep your Turkey Pan then going with the K&N filter got you the best results with the typical S&H air cleaner. If memory serves, it got you almost to the level of a non-turkey pan with free flowing filter. I'll keep looking for the article; I don't give up that easy.;)

Air filter suggestions

I have a 427 (454) FE in a Contemporary Cobra and am usingthe S&M filter. I tried using a couple of different configurations but always had hood interference even with the drop down lower mounting pan. Any suggestions? I know, a pro stock hood scoop will cure my ills!!!
There should be a new photo in my gallery but it is not showing yet as I just posted it. Thanks for any suggestions.
David

David, I looked for the pic in your gallery but could not find it.%/ But I did like some of your shots. Is this a pic of your Contemporary? Is this shot the result of an unusual camera angle or does the driver's head go that much above the roll bar and windshield? (Or is that just a really big guy behind the wheel?)

1) The SPF calculator is well worth the time and effort.
2) Use the largest dia and tallest K&N (or Accel) oil based cleaner
3) Check the difference of the car with the AC on and off in regards to a dyno pull (or 1/4 mile runs, at least 2 each).

The most important factor is to get rid of the plain paper element. A K&N element outflow the plain paper element by a huge factor.

Bigger than most

This was the night I bought the car. I removed the seat and bolted in a fiberglass bucket and aluminum cradle. I went down 8" and back 8". almost too much leg room now. I am trying to post new pictures but it doesn't seem to be working right. I'm trying to attach a picture of the new motor but it keeps saying upload error. I have it sized properly. ok. got it. Site doesn't like pictures from remote hard drives i suppose.

I used the Second Strike calculator and it called for a rather large area filter which wouldn't fit under my hood with the 1" spacer on the carb. So, I tried something a bit smaller in area but that would fit under the hood. We dynoed the car (my FE is 496 c.i.) and it developed the most power (both HP and TQ) with the AC vs no AC. So, I would say that the calculator is a good starting place, but not necessarily the absolute answer. Put the car on a dyno and do some experimenting.
The AC is from Billet Specialties and I now have a K&N filter in it vs. the paper one shown in the photo.

Jim,

That is the identical filter that I had on my Cobra and when I switched to the K&N element I could feel the difference, especially as I got near the top end of the power curve.
