Fitting roll bar grommets
I received my roll bar grommets, or escutcheons, from Finish Line yesterday and plan to fit them this weekend. The body where the roll bar protrudes if curved. Are there any tips on how to contour the grommets to sit right on the body?
I want to get them sitting rright but am unsure how to 'bend' them. Thanks, Paul |
I think the screws will conform them pretty easily to the body.

Blimey! OK, I will try that. The metal of the grommets seems quite thick but I will see what happens.
Thanks Paul |
It's only thin sheet with a profile to sit in a groove of the rubber. They bend, conform fairly easily. I like your avatar!

mick, I only know the Cobra as an AC Cobra.l never heard the term Shelby Cobra till I came to the US.
It is the only manufacturer's logo I knew of for the Cobra. Paul |
That's funny same here on the name, I was born in UK grew up in NZ.

Just went through the grommet fitting. In my case, they worked out, but it got a little dicey on the rear one, due to the angle and the oval opening in the body. Managed to get all the screws to bite, but some were real close. There is a photo of finished grommets in my gallery.

I used a english wheel. I also turned on the lathe a aluminum thread tube to go over the roll bar inside the trunk. I also made the inserts with a male end so I could screw it, into the tube, and with the rubber grommet, it makes a nice clean application and you don't see the rubber or screws on the outside.

Kevin, very nice!
A little beyond my meager talents but I will attempt to get some curvature on the grommet before I fit them. Paul |
Be sure to have the roll bar in place before you drill any holes.
I would not simple use the screws to form the bezels. That puts them under constant pressure; like being spring loaded. I wouldn't want that constant stress through the fiberglass. I have a large round metal pole in my basement, that holds up the center beam. I press against that to bend them into the shape I wanted. A little trial and error, but no big deal. |
