You think your engine is expensive ?

Yesterday my uncle was flying his AT-6 over s. Cal when the turbocharger bearing went out , @ 3500 feet the engine was smoking and producing very little power shortly after it gave up the ghost but he managed to make a dead stick landing at Van nuys airport that was 20 yes 20 miles away. ( an amazing feat for any pilot , and truley amazing for an 84 year old )
The replacement cost of a long block "rebuilt" is around 40,000 dollars not including labor and anything else that shows up bad in the rebuild . The engine that was in it gave sixteen years of reliable service..a true testament to good servicing , and pratt& whitney. WD

At 3500 ft I would want a $40,000 engine. Glad your uncle made it home okay. Pratt makes a good product, but it has to be maintained. I'm sure the FAA will investigate the incident.

Nope. No injuries or property damage, so they won't bother. Just a typical engine failure with a great pilot. It seems the FAA is only concerned when a private pilot dies or kills someone else.
