Anyone have experience installing WeatherPack connectors?
I have a simple question. I was able to download instructions for putting the ends on these WeatherPack connectors and it looks very simple and straightforward. The only problem is in all the instructions I see, they demonstrate using the big ratcheting crimp tool that costs about $85.00. Given that this is a one time shot for me and I'll only be installing 8 of these connectors, I wasn't about to spend $85.00 on a tool I will likely never use again. I bought the $25.00 non-ratcheting narrow width WeatherPack crimping tool. On the crimping jaws, there are 5 crimping stations numbered 1 through 5. Can someone tell me how to crimp these ends properly using this tool? I know that the top crimp goes around the weather seal, and the lower crimp goes around the bare wire, but what crimping notch in the tool is used for each? It isn't plainly evident when looking at it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The cheaper tool is ok but getting the right crimp is criticle to a long term satisfactory experience. Most people get the connection too hot when soldering making this a superior method of connection.

I have both pairs
767 Jockey Doug I will try and catch up with you this week. Add a drop of soldier to each connection. Might the wire tight but DON'T crush it. It will not lock into the weatherpack. I was sick last week and 3 days behind in homework. Rick L.

i used a boatload of those on my rebuild, front to back.
here is where i bought my supplies, some helpful information also. http://fordfuelinjection.com/ i would buy a few extra and experiment to get a feel how they work and would also buy the pin removal tool, i don't have it and wish i did, still. i use the same tool you show, you don't need the ratcheting style, just use your common sense. don't believe you need the solder. cut off just enough insulator that the wire hits the insert stop on the pin and don't use the killer crimp when you put the rubber grommet on. what worked for me was after crimping the wire, the pliers would flip 180* and the larger crimp would be used for the weather seal. a few of the crimps don't come out because the pin tabs would break or crush wrong. hth |
Terminal supply in Troy MI has a large selection. You can find them on the web. Car companies run over to this place when they are proto-typing something.
You can do it with the less expensive tool, it just takes a little time. Make sure you use the right seal. :D |
