I'd like to make a donation

Well it dawned on me to mouse over those symbols next to folks' names and I discovered some of us who have enjoyed the benefits of this awesome forum have made contributions to keep it going. Well, I'm much indebted to many of you who've helped me out so far on my build, so I'd like to help continue the forum too.... how's that done please?

Dirk

Dirk,

Every year one of the people will set up a way to take Pay Pal and checks or money orders made out to Brent Mills. Then they will take the donations for a period of time and once that is over, they either take them or send them to Brent. I can't remember who did it last year but one of the moderators could probably tell you.

Ron :)

Thanks for the info Ron!

Also,I don't believe just anyone can volunteer for the job and just start doing it.

I think Brent,Jamo & Ron (CW) has a screening and approval deal.

Ibr8k4vetts 03-23-2009 07:21 PM

I think it is about that time of year!

What we need now is for someone to volunteer to do the job.

Ron :)

I'd love to do the job but its tough to get the bank to exchange Indo rupiah and lottsa things still get lost in the mail. Think I'll just wait for an address too.

DocDirk 03-29-2009 11:03 PM

Moderator input?

Anyone else know of a way to support the forum financially?

Thanks!

Dirk

Dirk,

Here is the thread about last years donations. Perhaps you can look through it and get an idea of what to do. I believe the main thing needed is someone to take the donations and get them to Brent. Also set dates & such.

Bump - is anybody going to step up and handle donations for 2009?

Ron61 06-26-2009 04:50 AM

I have been waiting to see if anyone is going to do it. If not then I will find some other way.

Ron :)

Fred is right in that we need to work with whoever is the MC for the fundraiser.

We do have a candidate in the wings and he indicated that it would be a summer thing...probably mid-July, so stay tuned.

Thanks

On another forum I am involved in we offer what is called a silver star, and it gets you this:

- Silver Star next to your username, showing you are a financial supporter
- Animated avatars
- Unlimited Attachment directory
- PM limit of 500
- Ability to personalize your User Title
- Option to "hide" online

Its $25/yr and we have about 700 members who pay annually. You pay via PayPal and it runs for 365 days from payment date. The vBulletin software allows for more features and functions than these, but its a way for users to get system-level benefits for their annual contribution instead of it just being a "donation." This typically gets more support for the forum owner than just asking people to chip in.

- Ability to personalize your User Title

We already have some of your list. A Silver Star and a g gold Cup at the top of your posts show you have contributed and which years. Anyone who contributes has the ability to change their user title. I myself like it the way it is. As for animated Avatars it is easy to get them from many sites. The attachment feature I don't use often and mine hasn't worked for a year anyway. I had rather pit the picture in a storage area and link to it so you see a better picture. I don't care for the option of hiding on line. But this is just my personal opinion and should in no way be taken to meat it represents anyone elses.

My point was that there are a lot of additional benefits that could lure users to support the owner of this site that are not being organized or leveraged. My list was just an example. A lot of users don't know the owner nor do they care to give him their money. But if the forum can offer some value, such as additional functionality, then it stands a greater chance of increasing forum revenues from strangers, aka "donations to Brent."

computerworks 06-29-2009 07:36 AM

I know your suggestions are coming from the right place, but we are not in this to "lure" or "leverage" anyone.

Many of the features you mention (as Ron said) are already in place; e.g., Contributing members get more Gallery quota, etc.

The "value of the forum" is based on the members and their participation..those who appreciate it can voluntarily contribute when the time comes.

elmariachi 06-29-2009 08:17 AM

Yep, fair enough. Wasn't trying to tell you how to run your railroad.
