Steel Bodied Cobra?
 
I spoke to a gentleman a few years back who said he was the original owner of one of 6 or 7 Shelby Cobras that were build with a steel body, rather than aluminum.

I was wondering if anyone knew more about these cars, where I could read up on them, or if them even really existed.

He seemed very genuine, although I had never heard of steel bodied Cobras, I'm no expert.

Any ideas?

This reminds me of the definition of the difference between a fairy tale and an old car story…A fairy tale begins with “Once upon a time…” An old (Cobra) car story begins with “Once upon a time, no sh*t….”

No original Cobras produced in steel ;) And that's the truth...:p

I seem to recall something a few years back about an all steel "cobra" related thing based on some production convertible chassis. If memory serves correctly, it looked like an abomination's ugly sister.

It was a Healey 3000 reshaped to look like a cobra, was recently on ebay or advertised somewhere.

About once a month I run into someone who will ask me if mine is real. Then they continue with, "Oh ye, I have a friend that has a real Shelby... blah, blah, blah... Only drove it twice...." Amazing how many of those CSX's are around!

I don't think I've seen the Healy, B.M.B.C. but the car I refer to was based on something more modern and was actually supposed to be going into some level of production. It had roll-up windows and a folding top.

The guy I talked with says he bought his from the Ford dealer brand new in '66, and has had it ever since. He was teaching a class I took in Phoenix in either '05 or '06, and lived there as well.

So this isn't any new remake or rebody he was talking about, although I think he said the body was stainless steel, which really has me thinking something wasn't quite right there.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone had ever heard of these limited cars, or if it was a Tall Tale.

I think you have your answer ;)

Next time you talk to him, ask what's the CSX number? I think at that point the story will fall apart, or he really thinks the aluminum is steel. :D

They were the bodies found in the desert over the hill from the chassis...:LOL:

The only steel body Cobras that i ever heard of started life as a MUSTANG?????
