Another Baffling Question....
 
Recently I posted a question about the less than expected low end response in my West Coast and someone thought the baffles might be too restrictive at 2" ID. Well today I pulled the sidepipes and the baffles...they're even smaller than that!

Header pipes: 2" OD
Collector pipe: 3 3/8 ID
Side pipe: 3 3/8 ID
Baffle: 1 7/8 ID with lots of perforations and an end cone.

Well, this setup came premade with the West Coast kit... too restrictive for my 533 BB?

Any suggestions for alternatives that might improve power without resulting in deafness? :LOL:

i was one who made the suggestion, leave the baffles out and give it a run and see if there is a difference. let us know how it feels.

Check out http://www.classicchambered.com I'm putting a couple of different diameters into cars right now and should have feedback on the results soon. The stock mufflers we chopped were very restrictive. We've also done stainless speciaties mufflers with a HUGE power increase without much volume increase. More noticeable in the tone I think.

From what I've gathered at the Classic Chambered website and on this forum, my inserts are very restrictive because of the large outer flange size and the small ID of the baffle. I'm considering ordering the 3" ID Cobrapacks, but I'm not sure whether anyone has information on the dB / HP difference made by the packing option....

They're talking 103 HP and 102 Ftlbs from just pipes! We're using their nice transition pieces at the front to stop any reversion, backfiring, flow interruption etc.

..another recommendation for the Classicchambered 3" Cobrapacks. With that large of an engine I'd go with some true merge collectors, not just some "collectors". That'll ensure maximum flow's obtained.

Sidepipe size?
 
I spoke with Eric at Classic Chambered and he said he'd never seen a Cobra with 3 1/2" OD side pipes, expected them all to be 4". That of course keeps my in-pipe choice of baffles limited to about 2.5" ID. I'm wondering is this set of side pipes I have so uncharacteristically small? With 533 cubes I'm told a 3" ID is optimal for engine breathing. Then again with 645 FWHP and no intention of serious racing, maybe it doesn't make much of a difference anyhow? lol

The pipes are 3 1/2" OD, the mufflers are 4".

Another Baffling Question....
 
I am assembling a 10" F6 in a reconditioned Parks tube-11 7/8" ID. The
surfaced has been nicely roughed up (walnut shells) and blackened. I have
prepared a Baffle to mask the mirror edge, but am not sure I should use it
given the discussion of baffles mucking up the airflow.
The baffle was made from black ABS plastic, roughed up with a sander and
then painted with Krylon Ultra flat black paint. The inner edge has a 45 °
bevel. It has an ID of 9 3/4" and an OD of 11", and is designed to mount
on the top of the mirror mount 1/4" in front of the mirror surface. It
will mask the outer 1/8" (radius) of the mirror and leaves about 7/8 inch
clearence from the outer edge of the tube.
So, will a baffle like this mess up the airflow and reduce sharpness? I
will certianly try mounting it, but should I use screws (easily removable)
or glue (removable, but not easily?) Are there any modifications I should
make to improve the airflow?

Using an exhaust diameter calculator the rough ID allowing my engine to breathe fully is 2.8", with 2.5" being an 80% capacity second place. I like the looks of my sidepipes and would like to use them, but haven't yet found anything of 2.75" ID.... I'll call around to see if anyone would make that... I'm wondering if filling the remaining 1/4" surrounding space with fibreglass would make any sound muffling impact. I've driven the car with open sidepipes and it's a gas, but whoa...too loud for me!

Can't have my cake and eat it too....but maybe have half my cake and eat the other half lol:)

I am unfamiliar with this calculator. Is this some kind of minimum flow # that it generates based off of cid and ve?

I'm unsure how such a calculator as this would take into account unknown engine variables, but such as it is.... here it is. Any constructive feedback would be appreciated. My engine is a BB 533 with 650FWHP, 2" headers, Trickflow heads, ported, Vic Jr. Intake, Demon 850 annular carb. I don't have the cam specs at hand.

I have run different ID's over the years and stuck with a 3" ID and a 4" OD on the muffler. I used glasspack mufflers and welded up the sidepipes with chrome turnouts. It might not be the best looking pipes but they sound awesome and perform great. The bigger the ID the lower the exhaust tone, and the the smaller ID will give a higher note.On your size motor I would'nt go smaller than 3"ID:D
