Water Temp Gauge
Do most people's water temp gauge noticeably move down after their thermostat opens up? For example say you have a 180 t-stat, do you notice when your gauge hits around 180ish that the gauge will suddenly drop down in temp because of the rush of cold water past the sending unit? My gauge doesn't do this, and I'm worried that maybe my t-stat is sticking.

No, the water temp just hits continues on up to 185 (Tstat is 180) and stays there - when I'm not busy figuring out why 225 seems to be the temp for running on any given day...

No, it climbs to 80c and stays there, it does not drop unless i forget to flip the switch for the fan

Mine does some on both my street car and race car. It'll go just past 180 (both have 180 thermostats), maybe halfway to 185, then when it opens fully the temp will usually drop to about 170, then slowly go back up to 180 and stay there........
If yours doesn't, I wouldn't worry too much about it, I would guess it depends more on your gauge than anything if it does this or not. BTW: both have the same type Auto Meter mechanical gauges.... David |
Mine is steady as a rock. Slowly climbs to it's 180 reading and stays there within a few degrees up or down as I drive along and encounter various loads upon the engine.
On a side note: Just TODAY I removed my sending unit from the intake manifold (427 FE) and immersed it in a metal pot of water. Which I then heated to a rapid boil with a torch. At a brisk boil the temp gauge read 108 degrees centigrade. 1 C is approximatly 1.8 degrees F. Which means my gauge is reading about 14 F on the high side! I am at sea level, a rapid boil IS 212 degrees F, 100 C. I all ready knew this, but was reconfirming using the same test I used about a year ago, just to see if there was any change in accuracy (no change). Autometer gauges from Finish Line, they look good, but I've never been happy with the accuracy of the temp, kind of pisses me off in fact. Those gauges cost big money, that error reading is well outside what a reasonable person should have to accept as "adequate". |
I should have a 195* in mine as it is FI, but I didn't put it in. As it warms up it goes up to around 200* and then drops to 185*. If it is supposed to go up and stay, I wonder if my T-stat is going out?????

I'm using Autometer mechanical gauges and, before routing the wires, I did the same thing. Except I used the stove and carried the pot to the car. Both temp gauges failed, but Autometer made good on them. I tested my thermostat the same way and the first one I tried stuck closed. How do GM and Chrysler do it...

Before installing the Auto Meter gauges or any gauges for that matter, I bring them in the house and put the sender end in a pot of water on the stove to test them, both Auto Meter gauges and an el-cheapo Auto Zone set were within 3 or 4 degrees when the water started boiling.....
I also do the same with a new thermostat and I let the water cool down and make sure it closes properly, I go thru the cycle 2 or 3 times.... I changed the thermostat in my race car a month or two ago and tested the new one and found that it would stick in the fully open position....messed with it a little and finally decided it was not worth trying to fix, threw it away and got another..... BTW: makes my wife really mad to see me testing stuff on her stove!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:LOL::LOL: David |

Being single I don't have those concerns. SO, I've done just about evreything you can imagine in the kitchen. Boiled carbs, washed parts in the dishwasher, used the turkey baster to suck oil out of something. One day I was looking for a steak knife, couldn't find one anywhere. Started rounding them up, some out back, some in various tool boxes, one on my motorcycle, everywhere BUT the kitchen! Washed some wheels in the kitchen sink the other day.
Used that "carb pot" for cooking later, food never did taste the same when using that pot. Those women may be onto something, us guys left on our own can do some weird stuff... :):) |
One weekend when the wifey was gone I rebuilt 3 old Holley's and put them all in the dishwasher first, works like a charm,of course I cleaned it up real good before she came home.......:p:p:LOL::LOL:
One of these days,I'm gonna get an old/used dishwasher and put it in my shop, they make the best parts cleaners I've ever seen........ David |
