may seem like a dumb question but would there have been a whole lot of different windshields used in Cobras? (replicas) or would most manufactururs be somewhat the same...cripes I hate to have to get one outta the southern states...anyone have one for sale?

Different windshields
I don't know the whole of it, but I've heard that there are "English Windshield" and "American Windshield". I don't know the difference, but when I took my windshield out of the box it had a sticker on it that said "English Windshield". Installation went well and it worked out just fine for the visors though I noticed that Finishline sent two installation bracket sets for screwing to the windshield, (of two different widths), I've yet to install the windwings but I'm going to drill separately for them anyhow....
Anyone know the diff? Dirk |
I wish I had a way to know..cant afford to order a wiendshield outta the states and have it be wrong...I do believe that the previous owner ordered a replacement glass from Cobra restorers Part Number CP1363 I "think" that is the right glass ...wish I could cross reference that to somewhere closer?

my glass says Velas Laminated
43R 00003 As-1 M6 Dot 73 does that help? |
If the previous owner got the glass at Cobra Restorers I would definitely get a replacement from them. Their glass is from England and it comes very well packaged. Their is some differences between the windshields of some manufacturers. I personally installed a Lexan windshield and I have enough for 2 more. It was a little bit of work but from all the posts out there on the subject it was a good choice. I called around for the same glass number as you locally and NO ONE could cross reference that number. Everyone thought I was mistaken as they thought I meant Cobra Mustang! Good luck! Matt

how does the whole Lexan windshield work? talk to me :)

I've just snapped my window from a bad wheel hop take off on my MKI FFR & looking to get a new window. I as well am in western Canada. My original glass is the Velas #. Found a place in N.C called Bethania Garage & his price is very resonable compared to Finishline.

windshield / Lexan
I need a new windshield. I checked a local auto glass dealer yesterday. They priced the glass at $475 total but it was not tinted. When I asked Nick about Lexan he said it scratched to easy. Could not use wiper and if you cleaned the bug off, it would scratch the Lexan. He had a few customers that he replaces their Lexan windshield every year. But on the FFR and CC sites there are a lot of guys with Lexan (MR10) tinted windshields used on the street.
I got a price from a guy in S.C. ( I think) that priced one for $345 plus shipping and blykins price me one for $325 plus shipping. I'm still undecided about the Lexan. After I get my Cobra dyno'ed next week I will buy something. Dwight |
There are two types of Lexan..The cheap stuff which scratches and the good stuff which does not. I have mine and used it for 20 years come rain or shine. You can also take a 4 pound hammer and not break it. Cutting it is easy and drilling is also easy as it does not crack like acrylic. Well worth the investment.:)

CHANMADD, is the good stuff MR10?

I believe the difference in the "English" vs "American windshields are some small width differences. I have an original Cobra frame and bought my glass from Bethania. Using the Bethania glass, if you look closely at the bottom outside corners you can see the edge of the glass as it does not go all the way into the side channel. Its not a big deal for me, but I did have to take some time to ensure the glass was perfectly centered or I would end up with an easily visible gap on one side or the other. My guess would be if your frame is from a US based replica manufacturer. almost any of the readily available windshields will work. I'll check a little later and see what markings are on the one I bought from Bethania to see if they match what you have.

Scufty,
The ID on my windshield from Bethania is; Viracon Laminated ASI M-60 DOT 129 Made In USA 4 24 I am guessing this only further clouds the issue. Jay |
This old thread may help a bit
http://clubcobra.com/forums/archive/...p?t-20301.html From what one of the posters on that thread says, Velas means you have an original style windshield. Jay |

If you call a GOOD local glass shop with all the info from the "BUG" they should be able to get you a windshield from treir majod distributer like(ppg, lof, mygrant) and maybe they will be willing to deal on the price some.Good Luck.

Lexan MR10 is the way to go. Around $100.

Be sure you put the screws back where they came from - the brackets that hold the main part of the frame to the bottom portion have two different lengths and I was warned that if you put them in the wrong place you can crack the glass. |
