just changed to CLassic Chambered mufflers
Hello All,
I just finished making side pipes for my E-M. The previous pipes used a LoKar muffler which I was not happy with. Well, After installing the final product and laying a coat of VHT Black paint on the pipes, I started it up. From the rotation of the motor I knew there was going to be a difference. This was a very deep sounding crank and BOOOM!!! she fired up!!!!!! WHat a Difference. The motor is a lot deeper but quieter...... until you rev the motor then you here the BB sound. I am pleased with the sound and the total cost was about $260. Not sure if there was a performance gain because I did not really get on it but you feel that the motor does feel faster just by driving normally. I took the opportunity and replaced the Header gaskets with the split locking header bolts from Basin and header gasket from SCE along with Remflex side pipe gaskets. I used grade 8 5/16 bolts with locking nuts and it seems as if this will finally stay together.:cool: |

Dave did you have problems with these bolts ?
What do you mean by "sometimes "chasing" the threads more than I wanted on their way out." |
When the bolts worked out they brought a little metal with them from the aluminum heads I had them on/in. That's what I meant be "chasing" the threads.
They just didn't hold like they were supposed to. I bought them in spite of warnings from fellow motor heads. The ones i used were made by Breslin. I assume you meant them. |
Yeah sorry I was working from memory.
How is the stage 8 setup? It kind of looks like it is difficult to handle with the small pieces, especially toward the rear of the motor. |
It helps to be a little double jointed..;)
I did them myself on my 482. It took me about 30 minutes for both sides. You put the tab pointing where you want it and then lock the snap-ring over the assembly. |
Priobe,
I would like to hear more about your mufflers, please. My Stainless Specialties are starting to rattle and I am thinking about ordering the Classic Chambered mufflers. What size did you go with? I am thinking about 3" inside diameter and 28" long. Did you use any additional suppression devices? I am thinking about the Dynatech Vortex Insert Cones: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku The big queston is, can you speak with someone in your car at freeway speeds and be heard? The Stainless Specialties are good for this but are very restrictive. Do you feel the need to wear earplugs? My old straight through mufflers were literally deafening and earplugs were absolutely necessary. These things are important for us as we chase the rally championship this year. RallySnake |
Rally snake,
sigh, sigh At freeway speeds I would say that they are a tad bit noise. Having a conversation while driving at freeway speeds well, lets just say I hope you are not really into the conversation: :LOL: Its not that bad, I like the deepness of the sound. I have heard many youtube sound clips and it is nothing like the real thing. I am using a just the muffler cobra pack 26 in. long 3 1/2 in dia. You can always reverse the muffler against the grain to quiet the sound. The Lokar were a spiral design with a 7/8 tube in the center. Very comfortable to have a conversation. As far as needing ear plugs I might suggest using them to be on the safe side but did not have any ringing in my ear. The CC are quieter at idle but very very deep compared to the Lokar units. Other people always knew I had a BB but know I do. (Its always hard to please me.):rolleyes: |
Priobe,
Thank you, that's just about what I expected. I didn't know about reversing them, though. I will look into that option. Paul |
Priobe,
When you say reverse them, do you mean so the louvers are facing the engine side scooping air as it goes by? Or facing the rear with the air passing over them? As I was reading tribunals on the CC website one guy had actual db readings both ways to compare and the difference seemed minimal. John |
John,
The louvers would be facing toward the motor. However those db ratings do not say much because is it test at idle if not what RPM. At idle it is low and deep, as an example I started the motor up at 9:00pm and I felt comfortable that my neighbors would not complain. But drive away and reach 2500-3000 rpm that a different story. And no matter what side pipe you have anything after 3000 will be loud |
Today I installed a set of 3"(i.d.) SS Firefly exhaust on my spf w/a 427 so..What a huge differance from the stock pipes. The pipes look AWESOME and sounds like a nascar. Sound is a bit louder than stock but it sure sounds BADASS!

from classic chambered's website under testimonials...
"I ran them in both directions they sounded better in backwards, a nicer deeper sound, and they weren't much louder. We tested them inside the shop with a Db meter, It was a more controlled environment. Readings with stock mufflers were 98 Db @ 2000rpm 110Db @ 3000rpm 106Db @ 4000rpm. With the power stix in the right way readings were 103Db @ 2000rpm 108Db @3000rpm&am p;am p;nb sp; 111 @4000rpm with them in backwards they were they were 106Db @ 2000rpm 107Db @ 3000rpm 109Db @ 4000rpm. You have to remember we were inside a shop, When we moved it outside it was a lot quieter." Backwards seemed quieter by 2 db at 4000rpms according to that comparison. I really don't think 2 db would make a difference. They would be loud either way at 109 db vs. 111 db. John |
I put the Stainless Specialties in a SPF with a deeper not much louder exhaust. The power difference was however phenomenal. I am ordering the 3rd set of Classic Chambered mufflers tomorrow. We haven't heard any of them run yet but expect to soon.
