exhaust bolt torque

Installing my new ss exhaust. What should the 5/16 grade 8 bolts be torqued to ?(pipe to header).

kobrabytes 05-11-2009 11:10 AM

I have never torqued header bolts, I have no idea how I'd get to many of them with a torque wrench.

In any case for the first XXX? miles they seem to loosen pretty consistently. I would just suggest checking them every 100 miles and snugging them up until the are no longer getting lose.. Tighten them while warm if possible. Make sure you use antiseize on the bolts.

I can't get anything but a box end wrench on most of my header bolts. I get as much torque on the bolts as I can. Then check them after a couple of heat cycles. If loose check again until they stay torqued.

If they are in aluminum heads only tighten them when they are cold. Don't over do it.

I should have read closer sorry........

You need to "spot" torque them. First, put a wrench on the bolt. Then, pull as hard as you can until you see spots. You're done.

Isn't the question on the bolts that hold the headers to the exhaust pipes and not the headers to the heads?

TButtrick 05-12-2009 01:19 PM

Yes. That's the way it reads.
