Intermitant fuel pressure
I have a Weber set up using a Carter M6904 mechanical fuel pump. On the way home the car starts to cut out. I pull over and it starts, but as soon as I start to pull away it sputters and dies. I start it again and look at the fuel pressure guage and it's reading 0! I was able to nurse it home. The fuel pump has less than 300 miles on it. I pulled it off and worked the lever I had pressure comming out, but very little suction going in. Took it apart and the diaphrams look good, no holes. I could not check the 3 valves that are pressed in the housing. New pump on order.

It sounds as if you have found the problem but I would be sure the line from the tank isn't plugged also. And do you take your pressure before or after the fuel filter? I am sure that you have already checked this but it is just a thought.

I have a Fram HPG1 in line filter. That's the first thing I checked. Pressure is at the fuel pressure regulator just before the carbs. I just have a problem with a carter pump failing after 300 miles.

You might want to check inside the tank
Snakebit, If the tank is empty or almost, you might want to check the pickup in the tank and the rubber hoses there too. It is possible that you could have a small leak in the system. A fuel pump should not go dead in only 300 miles. If there is a restriction in the pickup tube, yes would be the answer. You could also hook up a vacuum gauge to the inlet on a tee and see what vacuum pressure the pump is pulling. Rick L.
