351W Overflow Tank

I've got an air bubble.

The radiator hose dives from the thermostat housing to the radiator with an in-line cap. This means that when I fill it (not really) there will be an air bubble. It is pretty evident too - the engine starts off and gets to thermostat temp (160-~80C whicn is the gauges) and then will shoot to 100+C. Then it drops like a rock (in 10's of seconds) back to normal.

I think the solution is an expansion tank. If I can get the reservoirs and cap above the pump I'll be OK. I've seen lots of hand constructed ones but the right one is some I've seen that attach at the thermostat coupling point. The problem is the one's I've found all exit to the right (passenger) side. I need one that exits to the left (driver) side to get to the top of the radiator. I also need to preserve the thermostat/water pump bypass hose (a requirement from Roush advise. Oops, I said it was a requirement).

The engine is a Roush 427IR which starts life as a Dart 351 Windsor.

Of course, it has to fit under a Cobra hood.

Any suggestions?

How about something like this?

Came from Cobra Earl's FFR parts supplier.

twobjshelbys,

Here's a pic of a CSX car with a Roush motor. I think your set-up is pretty close.

For reference, here's a picture of my Roush motor in an SPF

You may want to contact Roush directly or a Shelby dealer to see if they offer a tank with an outlet on the left side

Yes! The first picture is exactly what mine looks like. And the tank in the second picture is what I'm looking for except for a left exit. I can't believe someone doesn't make one.

Roush doesn't do these components, I'm checking with some more Shelby dealers.

Maybe the Kirkham tank would work for your application. They make one for a Windsor motor. Kind of pricey...but it's nice and shiny. :3DSMILE:

Wow! That's what I'm looking for. Yes, kind of pricey but it'll do. I like the metal exit pipe too.

I'll give them an email-jingle!

Thanks!

This is the one I have on mine from Finishline (I think DV was attempting to post a pic of it also)

Maybe Nick Acton (Mickmate on CC) can spool one up for you? Give him a shout.......

He's looking for drivers side exit to radiator. You'd have to give up vacuum advance on your dizzy from the looks of that KMS unit but it sure looks purtty.

The one from Finishline offers both a passenger or drivers side exit.

twobjshelbys - Looks like you've got a couple of good options. That Kirkham piece is only a buck twenty five more....looks good and your CSX deserves that. :D

twobjshelbys 05-27-2009 03:05 PM

Linky to Kirkham topic:

I just needed a few ticklers. This sounds like a good start.

I'd heard that FinishLine in Vegas has gone out of business - which one is it and does someone have a link to it?

Thanks!

Didn't realized this could be indexed either way. Here's a link to the Finishline piece. I'm running this on my 392W. It will take you a good part of a rainy day to get it polished but worth it.
