I kid you not...
We're at the Belmont Concours in Fresno, watching two elderly judges from the SCCA judging Dick Smith's "198" in the Unrestored Race Car catagory.
Female judge asks: "I thought the originals all had Carroll Shelby's signature on the dash." She then commented on the rough state of the original magnesium wheel with the original spare tire compared to the Trigos with the street radials, the slightly faded carpet, the faint rust on chipped sections of the underside of the frame, the fact the in-dash tach was unhooked while the big tach with shift light worked... Like the title says...I kid you not. :CRY: |

On the flip side, one CSX4000 series owner (no, not who you think) yesterday with an "Anniversary" car and a supercharger was overheard telling people that the car was worth 1.4M and had been personally owned by CS who's own mechanic did a 9 second 1/4 mile run in it :D .......

I recall going to the "Carnival of Cars" show at the old Packard Proving Grounds in Utica, MI, with a friend in CSX 3352 a few years back. They had the "drive through" style judging inspection. When we got out, and my friend opened the hood so they could inspect the engine, I overheard one clueless judge comment to another - "...now, why on EARTH would someone stuff a big V8 into an MG like that?" **) http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...3352-1_001.jpg It worked to my advantage another year, however, when my Pantera won its class there, beating out the one-off Pantera 7X prototype (which was in very nice shape, with extremely low miles on it). Chas-Sorry, but not true. Dick loved going to events like this to let new people learn about the history of raceing in the Central Valley. He was always a sucker for a great cause and would always support a lot of them.
Now the judgeing was a joke. Come to find out that the two judges had never judged a retired race car class before and were pressed into service at the last moment. They wondered why a complete frame off resporation was not performed on the car before showing it, complaining about the condition of the paint, carpet, and undercarraige. They even questioned why spare tire/wheel (the origional spare that came with the car mounted to the origional magnesium wheel) did not match the six pin Trigos on the car yesterday! When leaving the area they were heard saying that they wish such a historic car had been better preserved! The head judge knew Dick from his raceing days at Riverside and the significance of the car. His assistant even was in the passenger seat when Dick won his last Virgina City Hill Climb, setting his fourth course record. When all was said and done, Heather was presented with the Heratige Award for having the most significant entry at the event. She is now a very happy camper! |
Assolutely...Dick used to have his own little car show at the Sierra Sky park and pressed a few of us into service for his church's show every year.
Glad they salvaged the situation...I had to leave at 3:30. ;) |
