Need 1 chrm 10-32 nut for sun visor??
I lost 1 10-32 w/ 5/16 hex cap nut for my sun visor. The usual suspects have the nuts in stainless. My local hardware store has chrome nuts that are 3/8 hex. I don't really want to spent $30 to fix a $1 problem. I am considering buying the #6 nuts at my hardware store that are the right hex size and running a tap in them.
Where can I get a chrome sun visor cap nut?

Those nuts are likely to be Whitworth thread (3/16-24), not 10-32. British motorcycle shop. I'll take a look in our old-weird-parts pile tomorrow.

You should be able to get them in stainless at Homedepot for a couple bucks. That's where I got mine.

I think you may be correct.
The major dia of my screw is .1775" which is certainly too small for a 10-32. As a comparison I measured my 10-32 tap and it was .190" which is right on the money per my books.
The thread pitch looks really close to 10-32. However, it is so small it is hard to count.

Are you sure you want a regular style hex nut i.e. not an acorn nut which is what are on my visors. I have ss hex nuts in 5/16" 10-32 which can be polished to look like chrome. First try a 10-32 nut on one of your screws to check what thread you need. By the way mine are "small pattern" nuts which have a smaller than normal head size-available in quantity from McMaster Carr.

It is the Dome-head nut on the screw that holds the U bracket to the plexi.

No luck. If we ever had spares, they've probably been absorbed by situations like this.
Our new stuff looks to be strictly stainless and 10-24 thread.

If you replace all four screws on both visors you can get them at Loews in their stainless screw section and then you can make them 10-32 or 10-24 or metric and you could even purchase a spare, of course this mite cost you $2 instead of only a dollar.

There is a company that makes chrome hardware that is carried by a few stores around here. If you want I'll see if they have it.

I just checked McMaster Carr. They have acorn nuts in ss and chrome. Min package price is $8-you get 25 ss or 10 chrome. They are 3/8 in 10-32. Mine measure .366" across the flats - damn close to 3/8. I'd buy 10 chrome and replace all and have some spares.
