Beetle switch headlight dip question
I have the 5 terminal beetle relay and everything hooked up correctly according to 3 diagrams I have looked at so far. The brown wires that ground the solenoid circuit of the relay will switch to high beam if you hold it but it won't stay there. Is the relay just a flasher or is it a high/low switch??????:CRY:

It is a latching relay. They are used in the Beetle for this purpose.

The relay itself latches.

Replace the relay. Not repairable...

I put a new one in and it only holds high beam while the switch is held.

Here's a wiring layout from a '66 bug (J2 is the hi/low relay plug):

Your description tells me your wiring is right, the relay is either not a latching relay or is defective. Think of a retractable ball point pen, a similar mechinisum is used in the relay. A common reason for using latching relays is as a fail-safe in control circuits where you want the relay to maintain it's state if power is lost to the control system. (like a pump control or a traffic light system)
Actually another thought hit me, is your battery fully charged? (relay may not be getting enought juice to kick the latch) |

Thanks Ronbo you nailed it. I have just been playing with the not repairable new one and can get it to work after tuning up some mechanism parts and contact positions. The relay wasn't latching. Ironically enough the old one is working better than the new one and they do need enough juice to fully fire the little solenoid. I have got a charger on it so I don't wake the family by running the beast at 1 am. Between solving it and the time of day I think I might be able to sleep now...........
