Need to know length of pivot stud. Here is what I got
Hey guys,
Here is what I got: 351w TKO 600 tranny (From Mike Forte) Clutch (From Mike F as well)...Can't recall what it was Steel lakewood bell housing. Color of it is red the clutch fork has FORD stamped on it A clutch quad from Mike Forte as well The current stud is about 1 3/4 inches long I measured the length from the Bell housing to the pressure plate fingers and it came to 4 inches. I needed to replace the throw out bearing. I got the new bearing in and found out that the bearing isn't going far enough forward to touch the pressure plate fingers. I am assuming I need a longer pivot stud. The stud was a PITA to get out. I had to take the bell housing off to get to it. How long of a pivot stud do I need so that when I press the clutch the clutch fork will press the Throw out Bearing against the the fingers of the pressure plate? |
You may have the incorrect throw out bearing??? Maybe the sleeve needs to be longer?
Contact Mike, he should be able to point you in the right direction. |

With the throw out bearing touching the fingers of the pressure plate, you should have about 1-2 finger widthes (2-4cm) from the rear of the square hole to the rear of clutch arm. Get a stock replacement pivot stud from Mike or Ford. It should be 2" tall, and not adjustable. Since it fit and worked before, and doesn't now, you can only assume that the previous throw out bearing wasn't the correct part, or not a direct stock replacement. I now use only Ford bearings, as recommended by by people I trust. So when I replace it, it always fits. |
Thanks for the replies.
Well I think I may have found a better solution. Here are the steps I took....... 1. Took the drive shaft out 2. Took the TKO tranny out 3. Took off the Bell Housing 4. Took off the pivot stud using vise grips 5. Got a 3" carrige bolt and cut a slot where the threads begin for a screw driver 6. Installed the new bolt (btw it works much better than the stock pivot stud) flush with the bell housing 7. Put in a better quality throw out bearing 8. Installed the TKO and drive shaft 9. Adjusted the clutch cable using Fortes adjustable clutch quadrant. Runs and shifts like a Champ now Two days worth of work. I hope others might benefit from this post. |
