2009 California BAR requirements.
I just took my new SPF to the local California BAR referee to complete my SB100 registration and he informed me that in 2009, all vents from the valve covers must be vented either to the carbutretor via a pcv valve or vented directly to the air cleaner.
UNLESS your engine block was made prior to 1970, you must get an oil cap with a tube that connects to the air cleaner.
I found a cap at Kragen that has a vent hose attachment. Bought a foot of 3/8ths hose and a brass fitting with a 3/8 ths inch barb on it. All at Kragen for about $15.00. Drilled a 3/8ths inch hole in the bottom of my air cleaner. Installed the brass fitting and ran the hose from the vent cap to the air cleaner bottom. Viola......a closed vent system.
Will let you know if I fail the reinspection tomorrow.

All of this just to please the visual Nazi's, as it won't enable most specialty vehicles like ours to actually pass the smog sniffer test. But it looks correct/proper so that's why they make you do it. Of course, it will end up off the car and in your spares box once you get your sticker. :LOL:

Of course, before they booked the appointment, they couldn't have told you this first, so you wouldn't have to waste your time going back and forth twice.
I kinda thought that the PCV to the air cleaner was required, but they definitely let me go through last year without it.
I also had to go back a 2nd time to the BAR, but it was because the CHP didn't mark a box. **)

Just curious. Are you not planning on running a PCV valve on your Roush? I think that a lot people do, so this may not be a big issue. |

The 3/8" hose you are using must be an "Emissions rated" hose, typical fuel hose won't pass.

Hello Jim,
Did you or are you having a problem just getting an inspection date with the CHP? I've called three times in the last three weeks to get a VIN inspection appointment and got nowhere. Today I drove down to the Bakersfield office with four goons (excuse me, officers) sitting answering phone calls. I was told to leave another message stating what I wanted, what vehicle, and leave phone number. Ridiculous. BTW, did they check the operation of your wipers? 209

I had no trouble with getting an appointment. They were scheduling them about three days out. No checking the wipers. They only verified all receipts for the chassis and engine and tranny. Drooled all over it and then attached the vin and sent me on my way.
And yes, I will run the pcv valve. And installing the second breather was just a mild inconvenience compared to the 60 mile round trip drive to have the thing reinspected.
Then it's back to DMV to finish the reg process.
One thing I have learned about DMV... Get there just before they close for the day. They will not kick anyone out even if they have to stay till 7pm to finish. And by then, most everyone has left already. |

Thank you for that info. I had fuel hose and quickly replaced it this morning with PCV/Smog hose from Pep Boys.
Would have had to make a third trip if I hadn't caught it! |

This is all really good info. I'm finishing up my unique and will be in line Jan. 4th to begin the sb-100 process. I have a braided line from my pcv valve to my carb. Hoping that is ok. As far as the Bar. Does the DMV give you info on where that inspection occurs? Thanks

Yes DMV will give you phone # and address to make appt with the BAR Referee in your area. Often they are affiliated and on the grounds of local community colleges. When you make the appt, ask about the hose.

To be safe and to not have to go back a second time, buy some pcv/smog hose and use it when you go for your BAR inspection. It's cheap!
