opinions on roundels(meatballs), numbers, rookie stripes, etc..
If you were going to order a car, would you get it with factory roundels? Would you run the vintage advertising stickers and numbers? I like the look of the full race with numbers but sometimes I wish my car just had a basic stripe. There is really no way to compromise that I can think of. If you want roundels, I think they need to be painted on. Then, if you aren't running numbers does it look funny? I was just sitting around thinking about my next project and I was looking for some opinions. I realize there are plenty here!:3DSMILE:

I haven't sold it yet. Its on Corba Country as of Wednesday. If it sells, thats fine but I don't mine holding it for a while either. I just miss the roadsters.

Hey Dean, I think most of us would aspire to race their cars like you do, at least I do. Are we talking about your 40? Let's assume we are, plus I'm sniffing around for a 40, and may buy one when the right car at the right price comes along.
So while I may be speaking for the minority in this discussion, I prefer just the center stripes and side stripes. The rookie stripes looked outstanding on your Kirkham FIA, but I would leave them off your 40. Additionally, I would delete the vintage racing stickers. I'm a less clutter kinda person. |
Dean the meatballs, numbers and decals on my Cobra are permanent while the numbers and decals on the Mustang are static cling. So far I haven't had any problems with them coming off at speed but you must store them flat when not on the car so they don't curl up. Most of the time they stay on the Mustang but there are times when I take them off. Like when I don't want it to draw as much attention:D.

If you're going to have roundels, they should definitely have numbers in them. If you have the numbers, you probably need a couple of decals. Slippery slope, in my mind. Not really sold on all the rookie stripes (pit stripes, whatever you call them), kinda starts clogging up things IMHO.
All mine are static. Put the vintage decals on white static, cut them out, then on the car. I could take them all off, but have found I really like the more racey look. Like letters on my tires too in lieu of blackwalls. |

Dave the roll bar is just as it comes from ERA, I think the angle from above for the photo just makes it look shorter.
Trularin I can't find my receipt for the clings. It was from a company that was just moving from the NE to Florida last fall. They had standard as well as custom made. Dick |
That's whats so great about this hobby is you can dress your car to be a classy looking sports car or a ground pounding monster that eats small animals when sitting still.The race car look with the meat balls and numbers is a way cool look but i does draw a lot of attention and sometimes you just dont want that.

On the subject of meatballs, roundels, whatever - what diameter are you guys using? The static cling ones I see advertised are 18". I think they're too small. Scaling off of period photos, I'd say they were more like 20-22" back in the day. They were usually pretty big.
If you are having second thoughts about painting them on - why not have a local sign shop whip you up some out of vinyl? You don't have to worry about them coming off, and if you change your mind, just peel them off. If you decide that you like them, they could be permanently painted. I kind of like the look of a dark colored car with blank white meatballs and no other decals, stripes or numbers. Kind of looks like a newly-minted Comp Cobra, as delivered, before all the decals and numbers are added. |

I used static cling for years autocrossing the Vettes and the Butler...they don't work very well on brushed arruminum (just enough irregularities to keep them from being smooth). As you note, storage can be a bit of a PITA. But I gotta ask...why aren't you using magnetics on the Mustang? |
Jamo it's a replica Mustang so it is fiberglass:LOL: But really, I couldn't find the magnetics with the BP or small roundells for the hood and trunk so I went with the static cling for everything.

No, not really. I don't want to build another car so I am think of a Shelby, SPF or Backdraft. I would just like to have a cobra in the garage again.
