What should my interior cost on average?
Hi There,
Working on the getting the interior complete. I have 2 seats that need to be re-covered, using a leather like material, need simple door panels, the dash is painted so nothing there, need carpet in cockpit and trunk....I'm getting really high quotes....what is everyone else spending? |
I have worked with a guy that does $60K interiors on some hardtops. It is a small open car and if you are providing seats that need recovering and the panels to upholster it shouldn't be more than a couple of thousand in my guesstimation. A pair of correct leather seats is $1200 so there's a material and number to get going with. Make up some templates of things like carpets and take them to some shops for quotes. It's easy to do, makes it look like you know what you're doing and don't say Cobra. That ought to keep costs down!

what do you consider a "really high quote" i had mine done in a 2 tone tan(light and dark) and the seats and door panels were $300.00 and the carpet kit was another $200.00 and i did the dash myself for the cost of the material.

I just did a dash and a rear bulkhead on a customers car. I don't consider myself very deft at the soft side but they came out well (huh Dave?). The material can be fairly inexpensive, have a play with something simple yourself to start and see what you can do. I can also send you a page or two from a manual giving some instructions on some panel upholstery.

last spring Coach had a local guy to install the interior in his Coupe. Headliner, door panels, rear area, dash, the front half but not the seats, $1300. I check my photo file for pictures.

I found another picture of Coach's interior. Ricky, the guy that did the job lives in the county. Work cheap, loves what he does and does a great job. We have a couple of guys in the area that do car interiors. Lots of hot rods and muscle cars around here.
Eight years ago my Cobra interior cost me about $400. Dwight almost forgot, Ricky had to glue about 50 pieces of wood to the roof so he would have something to attach the headliner to. Coach and I glued wood and metal straps to the inside so Ricky would have a place to attach the side panels in the back and over the rear wheel wells. Nick is right on the money! Need to define your interior 1st.
Correct interior will start at: Wilton wool carpets will cost at least $1000 Smiths $1000 Seats (good ones with tubular steel frame) another $1200 tracks an additonal $150 Door/dash leather $250 Steering wheel $500 for a correct one Lucas Switchs $250 Correct Stick and ring/boot $250 Assorted Stainless hardware $150 Correct mirror $150 Correct ebrake $200 see where I am going, this is with your sweat equity and it is easily >$5000 before you start. This assumes you can source the right parts while in the build. A Lucas #104 mirror can take time to find as will many "correct" parts. Using Autometer, low Q seats, carpet from Home depot and MG steering wheel and you will be done for less than a G. Like anything in life, and Cobras, the variation is endless. Best on your quest! |
I just redid the seats and door panels from vinyl to leather.Luckily A long time friend owns a shop it still cost over $500.00.The tunnel has carpet but left the floors bare because of rain or washings.We all know these cars are not waterproof.

The quotes that I am getting are for....Door Panels, Re-Covering Seats and Carpeting. My Dash is painted and not being done, I already have the boot for my e brake and my shifter. I opted for a leather like material and and mid grade carpeting...The quote was $2500 and then I have had some as $1500...

I just paid $175.00 to have my two low back MKI style seats recovered in a non-leather but water resistant cover. They also modified the passenger seat with a cut-out where the emergency brake handel is at. I'd suggest that you spend some time at a few car shows and find out who in your area is doing uphostery work and who's work you like. Come up with a list of shops and go and visit them.
