You have to read some of the many Cobra books published in the last thirty or so years to get the whole story, but in a nutshell, it was Ken Miles and some other Shelby employees bench racing in the shop wondering "what if we shoveled a 427 into the engine bay of a Cobra?" soon after being ambushed at Nassau by the Corvette Grand Sports.
