Camcorder Mounts
I spent a day and a half over the weekend milling out a nice billet camcorder mount that attached to the roll bar.
This afternoon was nice so I figured I would give it a try. No luck at all. Appearently the car vibrates to much and it shuts the camcorder off. My guess it's in the auto stabilzation of the camcorder. Anyone else have a problem like this? |

John, sounds like you have a hard drive camcorder, they are known for that problem.

I made one out of aluminum utbillit. But I only have basic tools, so it looks a little crude. But, I lined the inside of the clamp with weatherstripping, to provide a cushion. That along with image stabilization provides a pretty smooth picture.

G'day John.
You could always try one of these. They utilise a suction cup system that helps eliminate vibrations. http://www.stickypod.com/ Here's a self portrait I'd taken whilst driving at 60 kph with a 2.5 second exposure on a stills camera. I'm sure that you'd get great results with your video camera on the track. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...oholm/13/4.jpg Regards. Steve. |

You are correct. In the owners manual it says to avoid vibration, shock, and loud noises. That pretty much eliminates the Cobra. I added a 1/4 inch of velcro material between the camcorder and the mount to lessen the vibration. No luck. It still shut off on it's own. Guess I will be buying another camcorder in the near future. Thanks for the replies everyone. |
Camcorder vs GoPro Video Camera
I had tried various mounts in past trying to film from racecar. I just purchased a GoPro camera and for under $200 it films with out showing any of the vibration problems we had with camcorders. They make it with standard and wide angle lens. They also have a selections of mounts for almost any application. Look at there website for info.

From I/O Port:
" This sturdy mount features a special polyurethane bushing to help eliminate the high-frequency vibrations found in the race environment " http://www.ioportracing.com/Merchant...roduct_Code=CM |
I second the GoPro camera suggestion. We have one we have used on race cars, motocross bikes, and even boating. Very stable and easy to use. I suggest buying the wide angle lens model.

GoPro Mounts
I use the roll Bar mount on Cobra for some filming. Stick on mounts in grille opening for different prospective. On my Ducati S4RS I use Handle Bar mount on Bars and various frame tubes.
|
I use the I/O Port mount with a Sony mini DV camcorder with a remote microphone under the passenger seat.
It works great to about 140 mph and then it quits. My wife said the camera has more sense than I do as it knows when to quit. BTW....it works much better if the automatic focus is turned off. |
DougD,
How is the audio with your GoPro? My GoPro has lots of garbage added, so its audio track is basically useless. |
GoPro Audio
I would agree that the audio leaves a lot to be desired, but the video more than makes up for it
