SPF Side Pipe Collector
Ok, I have read all the posts about replacing the restrictive side pipes in order to let my engine breathe properly.
However, I have a couple of choices to make. First, do I cut the existing pipes at the muffler and simply weld in a 3" replacement muffler (keeping the cost waaaay down), or do I have to cut the pipes at the junction of the four pipes and the collector and replace that too?
I guess what I'm asking is: Is there going to be a flow problem with the existing collector into the "new" larger muffler, or should I just remove the old side pipe entirely and replace it with a complete new unit from one of the vendors (most expensive).
Will the existing collectors screw up the exhaust flow into the new larger mufflers?

firefly performance.com for great flowing/sounding pipes.

I don't think the existing ones will hurt performance at all. I replaced the muffler only with great results.

Thanks, you just saved me $$$$$$$.
Now to see if Stainless Specialties came make me a muffler that fits my current side pipe measurements.

Just ordered the Stainless Specialties Performaster Mufflers with the 3 inch inside diameter core.
Will update you in a few weeks after I get them and have them installed.

I'm not an exhaust expert (nor do I play one on TV), but the stock collector on the SPF looks like it's rather inefficient by today's standards. It looks like it just dumps all four header pipes together with no thought or intention of making the flow efficient - compare it to a true "merge" collector, and I think there's a big difference.

While you wait, go to Home Cheapo and buy a box of their foam, 30db disposable ear plugs. You will need them at WOT. Go to my gallery to see the classic "baseball" pic with these mufflers. :3DSMILE:

If you're welding the stainless muffs onto steel pipe use TIG or MIG with stainless wire a grade higher than the muffs. For 304 to mild steel use 308 welding wire.
