Cost to paint? Mine only has a single colour base-coat/clear coat on it and the cost was a little over $500.
$500 to a friend who did the body prep and primer work 24 flat of beer to a professional painter who did it on the weekend in a proper spray booth free paint as I agreed to show the car at an autoparts show to help promote the brand of paint re-assembly....my time, so "free" I'm sure I could have the same job done today for under $5K at a professional shop, but I could be wrong. But not 200% wrong. A quote: Never to be exceded An estimate: Never to be exceded by 10% A WAG (wild a$$ guess): Never to be exceded by 25% |
No supprise...
If you don't have a contract in hand that states the specific work to be done, i.e. color, stripes, body prep, and sign off before color goes on, you leave yourself open to this circumstance with absolutely no recourse. It does not matter how much the shop charges per hour or how many hours it takes to get it done, it is what you get for 'X' number of dollars. Never give a car to a shop for a "time and material" job unless you are willing to go through what is happening and have very deep pockets. You need to monitor the process and be willing to pull the car if workmanship or costs are getting out of hand. After it is done is not the time to complain.... because the car is not in your hands, it is in the shops.

I just recently painted my coupe myself. The total cost for all bodywork and paint supplies was right at $1400 using name brand products like PPG base/clear and Rage fillers. All supplies were purchased retail at the paint supply store, even sand paper. It's the same store the local paint shops use.

Jeff Miller is in Temecula (So Cal) and Ken Pike is in Yuba City (Nor Cal).
Ken is doing my cobra right now. All body work, solid red, no stripes, 90 day turn around….$10k. Prior to choosing Ken, I had estimates that started at $18k and 1 year to complete all the way to $50k with a minimum of 120 days to finish. Im in the Central Valley of California, so apparently the painters around here must think highly of themselves. |
They must watch the Discovery Channel.
