Frenchie, the guy driving, was a great help in January with our donation car and also with my Cobra. He helped me get the proper coolant levels for shipping to cold Colorado. After the Prudhomme Super Snake, I spotted Frenchie driving CSX2568 back in (the wrong way) and he pulled it right in front of the Mustang for some Speed photo ops. So what squashed the value on this car? Lack of racing history? That very red interior? A bad economy for even the well healed? Again, I'm really puzzled why this car didn't fetch a whole lot more. And the yellow Gurney race car (the other poster boy of the event) barely gaveled at $200K!?!
I saw more well bought cars (too many to list) this weekend than well sold (a couple of the Camaro/Chevelle pro touring cars fetched stupid money...more than you could duplicating on your own). -Dean P.S. Nice pics. Thanks for posting these! |
According to a wrap up on Speed Channel it brought the top bid of all the cars.......$400 large. Nice car!

Maybe it was the angle that he had to sign, but Shelby's signature looked pretty squirrely. %/
The other explanation is that they have a Carroll Shelby signature machine at headquarters signing all of the other stuff that people send in. :) |
This Cobra should have brought well over a half mil. If the economy holds for a few more years, it'll probably still fetch way over that. I think all the alcohol-induced 'emotion' money was spent on customs. Rick Hendrick bought a few really nice muscle cars. Stallone paid 180 k for an 'over-the-top' custom Corvette. "Different strokes for different folks".

Somebody get me straight here. One good friend thinks this car was bought back by the owner, having paid over 500+ for the car perhaps a year or so ago.
If true, an expensive weekend show... perhaps 45K out-of-pocket. Non-reserve auctions are good for buyers in down-markets. Not so great for sellers. i don't honestly know. Some folks think the current market for authentic, non-race 289's is around $400K. Doesn't mean it is so, of course. But, they are probably NOT up at 550-600 any longer. Good time to buy? |

Correct. A buy-back is not at all a shill bid under most cases... far to costly an experience. It is typically rather an example of a failed auction strategy on the buyer's part. Should have set a reserve and paid for it, if the prices are dropping.
It would be unwise for anyone to believe there are foolproof auction controls over any part of the process, including timely remittance of funds and delivery of cars. Find out where your car is going for secure storage until you get the doe-ray-me. We all watched REIT real-estate swaps to "fix" (hide) poorly performing mortgages in the past and strange price increases of rather common Ferrari's "sold" between dealers at auction in the early years after Enzo's demise. Guess i won't sell baby just yet. Got to tell wifey the new house must wait, perhaps another year. |
