Spal 3000 cfm fan

Hi guys,

I just lost the bearing in my Zirgo fan and am in the process of replacing it with a Spal. I would like to purchase the 3000 cfm fan, but hear there is a problem with long term use. Anyone using a 3000 or had experience with one?

Chris

According to Spal it's for racing use only due to constuction. I looked at it before I went with the $80, 4000+ CFM Taurus fan.. 2 speeds too.

Spal fan

Spal engineers have come up with a recommended procedure to help that motor live longer (the problem), which is to drill a series of holes around the end plate that allows more air circulation to keep the windings cooler. I haven't heard what the outcome is after the modification, but seem to recall you may get something like 500 hrs out of it, which may be along time on a Cobra given how little many of them are driven.

Chris, got your v-mail, but been covered up this morning.

Looks like you're on the right track though. If you have room, there is a Flex-a-lite Black Magic fan that flows quite a bit of air.....then you could always go the route that Undy took above. Lots of Mustang guys use those fans. They flow LOTS of air.

Undy- What is the amp draw with that fan?

Brent - I'll call you manana, thanks.

It draws 85-100 amps on hi-speed startup and 35-40 amps continous.

It was the Black Magic I pitched.. It did do better than the non-shrouded run-of-the-mill 16" Spal that I replaced with it.

I'm also converting my existing 140 amp 12-SI Powermaster alternator from a one wire to a three wire system. That'll give me another 3/4 volt and and few more CFMs..:p

Chris, sorry to hear you lost the bearing in your Zirgo fan. I got almost 20,000 miles out of the Zirgo and it was still working just fine, before I took the car four wheeling out through the desert. I bought another Zirgo to relpace the one that tried to eat its way through a palo verde tree.
