And according to the write-up, so did every other Cobra driver that day. No doubt the guy in the Mustang has an automatic transmission, but really.....

Must have a lot of mods for that car to beat a cobra that badly.

I don't have a Cobra but seems that they should run quicker then 12s. I do have some nasty Mustangs that will eat Cobras up in the 1/4 mile but they are highly modified. We've got the Top Sporstman car dialed in nicely. It's a carbon fiber body 69 Mustang & we are in the high 6s with it. It's Blown alcohol 509 Cubes of 385 series BB Ford. I've also got a pro-street steel body 69 Mustang. Swapped out a blown FE stroker & am building a blown Boss Nine with 567 cubes. Favorite engine is a 427 SOHC with the Boss Nine being a close second. SOHC stuff has gotten way to pricey to be blowing up so we don't run them anymore.

Speaking as someone who has taken his SBF Cobra to the track, with a Cobra it is all about traction, you can have 500hp, but if you are running 17 inch wheels and tires without a drag racing compound, you won't get much faster than my 12:01 at 115mph. While most replica Cobras can run in the 12's, low 13's is not uncommon. Like Bill said, traction being a major factor. Friend of mine was frustrated when he couldn't break into the 12's with his FFR. BF Goodrich TA's, ultra low 1st gear (wheel spin), stock 302. 13.2 on a good day. My heavier than normal (longer/wider) Excalibur Cobra, with stock 302, ran in the 14's

I've never done a 1/4 mile drag test, so I havn't got a clue about it. However I did find a little formula for estimating a 1/4 mile ET based on weight and Hp. For a Cobra with driver and gas at 2750 lbs and a lightly modified FE at 450 hp, I get 10.65 seconds.
Of course, as per the posts above, I'm sure traction plays a huge picture. Didn't see any wheelspin in the video though. I wouldn't compare any non-road car that has to be trailored to the track. That's obviously not fair. But I suspect the video poster drove his Mustang there. Anyway, the embarassment wasn't meant to be viewed from Cobra owners in general, just the club that invited the Mustang guy to their event. His Mustang sure made an impressive jump off the start though. I do admit to enjoying those videos where the CObra out-runs the Viper and another one where it outruns a new Corvette. |
I take those 1/4 mile and horse power calculators with a grain of salt. They DO assume it's a perfect world, every shift, every hole shot, no tire spin, humidity, density, etc. all "perfect". Also perfect gear ratio's! Your in high gear at max rpm JUST as you cross the line. You've used it all up, nothing left.
I think the horse power calculator based on trap speed is perhaps a little more accurate than the ET calculators though. You could turn a relatively low ET and have an awesome trap speed mph, for instance. Trap speed is what typically separates a small block from a big block car. Small blocks spin up to rpm quicker, often a better hole shot, but they flat run out of power at toward the end. Limiting their final trap speed mph EVEN though they might have won the race! |
