Engine cutting out at 5000 rpm
Any quick ideas on why my dad's car is cutting out around 5K? He has anluminum genesis crate engine (468 or 482), demon carb, holley elec pump (only a single fuel filter upstream of pump) MSD6AL box. Only has 1000 miles, but I believe has always done this. Car run great until then, then its cutting out or starving it seems (I probably couldn't tell the difference) He's replacing the filter tomorrow. I wired in the MSD. Can you mess that up to where it cuts out only at high rpm? I think he has really good wires with looms to seperate all of them along the head. I haven't changed the chip to see if that affects anything (has 6K chip now). Hell, maybe he has a crimp in the fuel line? I know he messed with the quite a bit replacing fuel pumps.
Anything else easy to check? Mat |
You might want to pull that limiter chip as a temporary test. It could be defective.

MSD Needs 13-14 Volts
In the last year my car and others have had the same issue, caused by low voltage to the MSD. Either bad alternator/battery/ ground wires. Check those and let us know. Also check corrosion under Distributor cap.

You may also want to check rotor phasing within the distributor, adding MSD will crossfire within the cap a lot easier if the phasing is wrong.
Does the engine "layover" at exactly 5000 rpm regardless of throttle opening? |
relocate coil and check cap and rotor
951mat Mat need to relocate the coil to a stand up instead of laying down on side of motor. Coil overheats from not getting oil all the way around it. Buy a cheap coil and test, don't need an MSD for this Replace cap and rotor. Look at both of them for carbon tracks or the center of the cap being broken. (carbon Pile) Start here. Leave the MSD 6al allow for now. Rick L. lets do basics first

...had same problem. Plugged in the 7000 chip, problem went away. The chips aren't always that accurate...

This happened to me once by mistake. Here is another easy check -
>> MAKE SURE THE PICKUP WIRES going in to THE MSD DISTRIBUTOR are NOT LYING NEXT TO or TOUCHING one of the SPARK PLUG WIRES. I ran a plastic tube around the distributor pickup wires so it would not pick up any signal interference from one of the plug wires. If nothing else, check this for sure - this can occur exactly as you describe at 5k rpms. |
It probably wouldn't hurt to stick jets two sizes larger all the way around and give it another try.
In winter I always went two sizes up from summer. |
I'm guessing that five months wasn't what Mat had in mind when he asked for "Any quick ideas." :D

no worries. Dad had a new distributor installed. There may have been an easier fix, but all is well now. thanks.
