Vintage Racing
For those of you who vintage race your Cobra, what sanctioning bodies allow 'glass cars? Any difference on the eligibility if it's a CSX car versus another manufacturer? In my research, it seems that most sanctioning bodies require an alloy/aluminum body.

Depends on what organization of course but most that I know of don't allow glass bodied Cobras as vintage cars. They don't allow later CSX cars either, glass or aluminum.
Though I have seen a late model FIA at Coronado. The driver shyed away from me asking if it was an original CSX. Just looked too perfect to me and he didn't like me asking.

Some vintage racing sanctioning bodies accept the Shelby GT40 continuation car for vintage races, but that's probably about it for replicas. That being said, the SF Region SCCA Vintage races at Laguna included some Factory Five challenge race cars this year.

There is no "Shelby" GT40 continuation car, it is the "Superformance" GT40 that has been accepted by numerous vintage sanctioning bodies. There is a "Shelby 85th" version of the SPF GT40 but that is merely a trim option.
The Superformance GT40 "R" has competed in SVRA, HSR and with the correct options is eligible for FIA historic events as well as the Rahal Vintage series in the US.
Efforts are underway to allow the new Superformance 289 FIA/USRRC cars to compete in some sanctioning bodies to help fill fields that are becoming increasingly small due to reluctance of owners to risk mega-expensive cars. To a spectator there is little difference in an alloy or composite body if the chassis is the same and the driver is putting on a show. |

I think you will find not many official Vintage Racing Events accept any replica at all however there are a ton of Shelby Club and Vintage Racing Clubs that do. You can have a lot of fun at these events. The SAAC (National Shelby Club) accepts Replicas in their events along with many others like Run and Gun, Team Shelby Nationals at Mid America Event in Tulsa etc. Not sure why the official Vintage groups do not as there are not many orignial Cobra owners that put their cars on the track anyway.

There certainly is no shortage of vintage Corvettes to convert to race cars.
21,000+ 63's, 22,000+ 64's, 23,000+ 65's, 27,000+ 66's built. |

My understanding is that NONE of the vintage sanctioning bodies allow aluminum Corvettes to compete!
One of the issues to me is that the definition of "vintage" varies. Some allow a "re-creations" while the West Coast "purists" require a car with race history from "back in the day". Some allow numerous modifications (you know, those 1966 GT350 R Models with 351s, rear discs and Global West front suspensions....) while others groups are trying to recreat the "feel" of a certain period.
Many have said it, "It certainly is "racing" but it sure ain't "vintage"! |
