Hank
I was there for three times ( unfortunately without my ERA ) and it's everytime a big event. At the first weekend in August there is always a big Historc Racing event with Bugattis, Bentleys, Jaguars, Porsches, Can Am cars, Cobras, etc. See also under: http://www.nuerburgring.de I hope, that at August 2002 I have time to go with my ERA.... Walter,
Thank you for the response. Have you driven on the course? I am not sure when our trip will take place. Seems more likely late July, 2002. We have friends in Biberach, and they want our family to travel to visit at that time. Cobra on that course? Wow. Hank FFR 1776 |

Cobra on the course?
Hank,
If you take your Cobra to Europe next summer, especially in Germany, they love you, cause they know these cars. I don't think they race the old 20KM course anymore, but on the new GP Nurburgring track south of the town. Bear in mind this was a street course converted to a track. I helped pit and tire test in the 1968 race for the Hawkins team FAV/GT401074 and rode the trarck with a mechanic at speed. I also think the local law enforcement will take a dim view of your screaming thru Adenau, Nurburg, and the other villages in a side piped Cobra, but a Porsche rental you might just get away with it. Save me a flippy for my next trip over there. |
Sonny:
you are right. the 14 mile course is only run on special occasions. the smaller 2 or 3 mile road course is run regularly. unfortunately it is nearly impossible to get flaggers and support staff to man the entire 14 mile course known as the nuburgring. however, i have read that for a fee any individual with the balls and the wheels can drive the actual 14 miles of the ring without support staff whenever they please. this months sports car international has a review of the new mercedes sports car driving on the actual 14 mile ring. the car is driven by the european champion that runs the track version of the new mercedes sports car. interesting read with professional insights on the ring. did you ever see derek bells, "IN CAR 956"? actual footage of Derek Bell behind the wheel of a 956 at speed on the nurburgring and other famous tracks around the world. a video well worth the price. -ssnake (dan):MECOOL: |
My understanding is that you can drive the actual 14 mile Nurburgring for a per lap fee. I guess they also have busses that run the course, as well as BMW cabs for a per lap fee.
I wanna run it one time with an instructor and one time solo. Hank FF 1776 |
From fifteen years I'm racing in Nurburgring with my Cobra,I'm enterd this year and pleasead to see you ,race numbers is 7,Nurburgring is possibly the best historic meeting in Europe, see you there in the first week ent of August, regards,Bernie

I was stationed in Germany from 1978 through 1983 and I flew over the Nurburgring many times. At that time, drivers could indeed circle the track for a charge, and there were almost always several cars on the track when I flew over. Assuming things haven't changed too much in the past 20 years, I hope you'll be able to drive the track.
