the good old Seneca Lodge
Gone are the days!
I kin remember sonny...... This is for you Texas guys: I met Dan Blocker and his driver(?) who drove the "Vinegaroon Special" from the track to the Lodge! I also met Jim Hall, Hap Sharpe and a few others there. The old (and LONG LAMENTED) F1 race at the 'Glen was the pinnacle event of the Fall in New England. Anyone who was there realize that it was the dress-rehearsal for Woodstock (the infield tent-city was truly a circus). Those who were there will no doubt recount at least some of the following: 1. the annual sh*thouse fire/riot 2. getting maced by the Montour Falls police (during Event #1 above) 3. Big Cat Malt Liquor and Jelly Donuts fer...yup!...breakfast 4. Unlimited access to the track after 8 p.m. (thanks to aluminum barriers) 5. many "hot laps" in two-way traffic during #4 above 6. Graham Hill's INCREDIBLE repetoire of truly FEELTHY jokes overheard at the Lodge 7. Jim Clarke taking Hap's wing off the noggin while following his team-mate up the hill... Well....you mentioned the Lodge....look what you brought back!!!! Gratuitous post-scripts: "Under the spreading Chestnut Tree, the Village Idiot sat... Amusing himself by ab*sing himself, And catching it in his Hat!!!!!" "The Cabin-boy, the Cabin-boy... a plucky Little Nipper... Lined his a*s with broken glass and circumc*sed The Skipper!" Sorry, had to throw those in "non sequitor" since there was no "Joke de Jour" posted today!!!! |
McBruce....
...we ain't ruling out the Glen just yet.
We are just kinda 'light' on info in regards to the new owners of Lauren Fix's Driving School policies and prices. Both Cranky and I'm are waiting for additional info on the change. We wanna be safe but not have to pay through the nose. I don't mind paying a little more to go race, but it does add up. So $80 to 100 more for the same event makes me think we go elsewhere. 2 days at Summit Point cost $270 with NASA vs. $480 at the Glen. VIR is also reasonable and the guys down south are great! Worst case we can run with the Rochester Shelby Club at the Glen, they do it practically at cost just for the love of it. I'll miss running the Glen, but its time to take Cranky's Circus Act on the road. Lots of invites coming in from down south, out west...what's next? The Great White North??? If yer game, you can hitch a ride or bring that BB Cat witcha. |
John,
Tim L., Bill K., and myself will be stopping at the PDA on Thursday afternoon (hey, I am off till Monday). I'll see if I can dig up any more information in regards to their "new" venue at Watkins Glen.............. Yours in Fords, Bill S. |
Love the Glen
Well, I wanna throw my vote in for at least the May Glen event. I know all the negatives that may exist, but the track and the area are just to much to pass up.
Summit is about the same driving time for me, give or take an hour or two, but VIR .......... Keep me posted on the CC season schedule. McHank FFR 1776-II |
Hank,
You gotta try VIR at least once. I know it's a long haul but what a great place and lots of Cobra racers. Not as good as the Glen but a few less obstacles to hit. I hope things work out with PDA but so far I am getting no feedback on how thing will run. I do know at Pocono it is a circus and I have heard the same about LRP. Seems they like a full house meaning 120 + cars. We will have to see. Cranky |
seneca lodge.........
Fred,
remember the steaks after a couple of days of cold eggs, hot beer and juicy hot dogs....the lodge was a welcome sight late sundays...........then do you remember the clear area above the little creek over the flagmans shoulder and any of the races in the 60's seemed to draw the hippy chicks after a rain, ah boy the wet t shirts, then none, then to many rolling rocks and the mud slides down the hill for the rest of the evening...........those were the days.......quit it! |
