Question

Racer X #99

Do you mean racing or open track events?

I want to answer but want to be totally truthful as Bill Clinton might have been had he considered the same question.

I hope to be "racin'" this summer. I won't be aggressive in a Cobra - not safe enough & I'm not rich enough. Maybe some day I'll get an old WC car. For now I want to feel the Cobra power & try out some road courses & maybe a Rchard Petty driving experience at one of the ovals. If you mean going as fast as I can, I can't afford to. If you mean havin' fun on a race track, I'll be doing it this summer!

I know that there are only 25 racers in Club Cobra but only 20 voted in the poll. Where are the other five?

I race...

I just completed my car in Sept and I attended Run & Gun (which was terrific). Got to try autocross and the Road course at the Gateway track in E. St. Louis. Need to work on both of those.

Also I've drag raced the Cobra about 3 times so far with a best time of 10.86 @ 124.

Oh and there is a picture of the car in this months Kit Car magazine along with a bunch of pictures of the other cars at R&G.

What kind of racing were you referring to?

John McMahon 02-05-2002 06:24 AM

Awright, I voted...I've been waaay too busy.

I plan on doing 'limited' open track events with the 289 once completed.

My primary racer will still be McMustang.

mustang man 02-05-2002 08:46 AM

Do you mean to tell me that I am not the only old f**t on the track? I always thought that I was the old guy out there and now I see that the 50+ group is the largest segment. I wonder how come. Maybe we're old enough not to worry anymore about how we are doing.

mr bruce 02-05-2002 08:49 AM

I eat to prevent from getting hungry

Only place I've been racing so far ,is from the garage(working on secret project "C",for Elkhart Lake, since I ain't allowed to run no CHEETER! up there) to the dinner table.

John McMahon 02-05-2002 08:52 AM

Bruiser,

I holding you to that statement, your "Project" bess be ready fer Da Lake. Club Cranky won't be the same without you or it.

Don't ferget, this will be the "Inaugural Ball" so to speak of Club Cranky to the midwest and Left Coasters.

We will need full representation from the East!

So who's coming??????

mrmustang 02-11-2002 06:11 AM

Sigh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey JM,

Well, looks like one event will be on my schedule this year...More than likely the NERC, strictly due to a lack of funds (for obvious reasons) and a lack of spare time (also for obvious reasons), cannot even consider myself a 10% racer or waxer this year :D :D :D ......At least I will not be selling the Cobra at this time (will sell off the 1968 (perhaps even the new 1966) Mustang(s) first)...So perhaps next year, I'll be able to add more events on to my schedule..........

Yours in Fords,

Bill S.

John McMahon 02-12-2002 09:01 AM

OK Bill!!!

Glad to hear it, you can trailer up with us if you like.

I was kind of hoping that that new West Coast contingent, Club Stinky, would be coming too, but they ingonored our first invitr to Road America and then had the balls to throw down the guantlet for a Gumball Rally.

ERA535 02-12-2002 09:26 AM

Oh no you don't! Didn't think I'd be reading this, did you?

The RA deal and the Gumball are two totally separate issues!

:3DSMILE:

As I still have family in the Chicago area and too many friends in Milwaukee I have eye marked Elkhart as very probable. I am pretty sure I will not have my ERA there but then again drinking within a day of trying to look good on the track isn't something I do well. (I have photographic evidence of that).

Cheers!

Racer X and McMahon

Of course we're old! I didn't start till I was 53 cuz I couldn't afford the car till then. Also, I have learned that when driving a Cobra, the fear/respect and slower reflexes that we develop as we "mature" serve you better than the absence of fear and fast reflexes characteristic of the young!

Flyin_Freddie 02-20-2002 10:48 AM

Well put, Pete...

Well placed fear will serve you better than ill-placed reflexes most every time. At 52, soon to be 53, I've learned that if I respect what 500 horses can do to a 90 inch wheelbase vehicle and not let myself get into situations that require more 'nads than I've got, I'm usually good to go. I push it, and love it...but I know where and when to back off, too. Patience wins more races than pure horsepower.

I've also learned that the seat of knowledge is most often at the foot of an elder. I never thought I'd be saying that, but I've learned this the hard way. Experience is indeed the best teacher.

I owe most of this to my Dad and Mom...Mom's gone, now, and I miss her terribly. Dad's in a retirement home and had a slight stroke in December which has really slowed him down a lot. I'm sorry I didn't listen more to them when I was younger and they were trying to teach me from their experiences. How I wish I could tell my Mom how right she was about some things.

Is 52 too old to race...? Gee, I hope not...I'm not a full out, open track, balls to the wall with my hair on fire racer, but I sure do like the feel and the sound of slipping around the track in SPF#770, getting the line right and watching my lap times improve.

DanElam 03-13-2002 08:36 PM

Me. I run the NASA Spec Roadster series and some SCCA GT-1 (where the car does NOT have a shot). The NASA series is a lot of fun. In fact, we are racing in the inaguaral race this weekend out at Sears Point for the NASA west coast series.

Here's the new scheme for #66 this year. Sorry the image quality isn't better.
