Dan Gurney question
Hi, looking at my books i noticed Dan Gurney racing a Lotus 19 sportscar at Sebring 1965. This car had a 289 Ford engine and also it looks like it had the same body paint and livery as the Shelby entries. Was it prepared by Shelby American?

That car is now owned and raced regularly at Monterey by Nancy Gimble.

Unfortunately, Nancy Gimble passed away earlier this year. A number of the entries had a black #19 decal in her memory.
Particulary sad since the car was in process of renovation/restoration & she died just before it was completed.

FYI. Nancy used to run the Lotus 19B. She passed away this summer. Her husband Gordon now campaigns the car along with his original USSRC 289 Cobra.

I have had the pleasure of talking with Gordon & Nancy Gimble in the pits at both Monterey and Sears Point past at the Mini Nats. Gordons original USRRC 289 car and the Lotus 19B are maintained as they are raced, they are not pristine pieces but rather well maintained cars that have the typical paint chips, oil leaks and general scruffyness under the hood that a competition car will accumulate through the years.
Unfortunately it was reported on the Norcal Shelby site in mid Summer that Nancy Gimble had died. There was no explanation given.

I saw Gordon run the 19 at the MHR in August but had forgotten that it was because Nancy had passed away. That is very sad indeed. Gordon must have been running the gamut of emotions behind the wheel that weekend...
There were a couple of Trans Am Cougars at Monterey. It was neat to see them as they must be about the rarest (after the Firebird) of the front-line T/A competitors--

Dan's
Lotus 19B was run at Daytona in 1965 as a Shelby entry, in Shelby colors and under the direction of FoMoCo. He was to be the "rabbitt" and set a fast pace in hopes that the Ferraris would give chase and fail while the GT40s held back to finish. It was not an "AAR" entry. I do not believe that the Lotus was ever run under the AAR banner. The first entries of any cars as "AAR" happened in 1966.

Not really Shelby colors. Remember in the 50-s 60's - Nations had their colors - and the US was White and Blue.
