I blocked off the two breather holes in the spray oiler valve covers, as I hadnt researched engine breathing that much when the motor was built, and was going to plumb -12 lines from these hole, I also made up baffles, which only gave a small amount of clearance from the rockers - too messy! so my solution was to block these holes and it appears similar to your round plugs, I prefer the clean look!

Your figure of 1 3/8" breather are you referring to the ID of eg. K&N filters?

I agree with your recommendation of two breathers for the engine and basically same for the pump to oil tank, so what I am considering is run two -12 engine breathers to the Peterson tank, one from the valley and the other from mechanical pump hole, as you recommended! The oil tank can either have two K&N filters on the 1/2NPT ports, or two -12 lines going to a separate breather tank.

Where did you obtain the nice breather tank, or was it custom made?

The breather tank came from Joesracing.com

Then we modified it to fit under the fender as part of the Dry Sump tank....

And yes the 1 3/8"inch is the ID for a K&N filter..... one on the dry sump tank and Two or equal to that on the motor.....

Our breather turned out to be about 2 3/4" inches and then we stopped pressuring the block..... the pressure created oil leaks..... ugh.....

Now it seems to have slowed down to a weep...... which is all you can expect out of a FE motor....

I wish I had some lap times to report..... but we have been working trying to finish the car up for the Run & Gun.....

That will be our initial test to see how everything works out...

Then we come back and a week later there is a NASA event up at Road America....and we go up there and continue our testing.... lot's of testing will be needed .....

Maybe this winter we can go out west to some event.....

We have a temp sender installed in the scavenge line going back to the tank..... coming out of the pan......

And we have a Oil temp sender installed going back into the motor after the thermostat.....

Two.... out and in....temp....

Oil cooler
 
Looking at heat exchanger radiators, basically a normal radiator with an oil cooler built in to the bottom tank, C&R Racing make radiators for Nascar, hit something and it all goes!
Aeroquip make an oil cooler that goes in the bottom radiator hose, and has two -12 fittings for your oil lines, this may be more manageable than an all in one radiator as first mentioned in the post, and is probably similar to what "Jac Mac" mentioned earlier in this thread!

I reckon that a heat exchanger negates the need for a thermostat, as it would more than likely speed up warm up and balance the different fluids simply!
The only downside is not having the nice air cooler in the front cowling **) :(

You are right on the mark...... however...the Cobra doesn't have much room for a heat exchanger in the bottom radiator hose.....

Just not much room for anything....

Also the heat exchanger will only get the oil up to the water temp on a cool day...... which is not hot enough..... needs to be 210*-220*.....

Heat exchanger will maintain oil temp up to water temp on cool days....

On Hot days ....no problem....with getting heat...in the oil.....

Just this to add: The oil to air coolers have shown to be more efficient on our race motors. On larger tracks, with the oil cooler in the radiator, water was 200 and oil was 250-260. After switching to a large, oil to air cooler, water is ~200 degrees and oil is now ~230 degrees...considered very good in our application.

For everyday driving I've bought a nascar type C & R alum rad with heat exchanger--it puts the oil temp where I want it and I think it will even be acceptable for a few hot laps at St Louis, Road America or the other road coures

But if its in competition, My son Corey will be driving it on the road courses and I'll drag race it--when and if we go to Bonneville we'll both take a turn
at the 200mph mark
