Lone Star Track Upgrades
Been a while since I spent much "upgrade" time on my Cob, have gotten a couple other new toys that I been spending time with. :) I am going to start running my Cob at the track (Motor Sport Ranch - road course).
I have the factory discs all around and figure I will need to upgrade brakes. I have 17" wheels - what is everyone going to and do you go all the way to power. I have a front anti sway bar I custom fabbed, anyone else ever figure what will fit on the back of the LSC? Any other pointers? Bruce |
Wilwood 12.19", 4 piston, drillied and slotted rotors. Front # 140-7017DP. Rear # 140-6292DP. Best supplier is Hotrods USA. http://www.hotrodsusa.com/
Easy install, perfect fit. Changed the pads when I went to Mid-Ohio last summer, and when I go to Hallet (little dusty for the street)(I can change the pads without even pulling the wheels). Work great, no fade, plenty of brake. Brad W |
Fantastic - thanks Brad!

Bruce,
the 140-7017dp will add 1/2'' of track width to each side. They suggest installing this kit before ordering wheels just for this reason. They also have a kit that keeps your original width. B1F 2427402ZFSL 12.19" x .810" 4 Piston Forged Superlite Note 4 - Does not add to track width. Zero offset http://www.hotrodheaven.com/tech/bra...akes_index.htm Mustang II Disc Brake Kits We have a wide selection of brake kits for your Mustang II Conversion. We always recommend the purchase of the Wilwood brake kits over the OEM (factory) type because of the amount of pressure that is required to operate the GM calipers. What you save on your initial purchase will be lost with the headaches, time and parts you have to buy in addition to the normal master cylinder used with a 4 piston caliper kit. Thanks Fred - I just installed a set of Hossiers and would sure have hated an additonal 1/2 inch track width -

Bruce- any particular reason why you're picking Motorsport Ranch to be your new track??
My understanding is that after their big addition it has become a haven to motorcycles- sportbikes. the new elevation changes and big dipping curves have appeal to their bikes. I've HEARD it isn't 'cobra friendly', per se. Have you given any thought to Eagles Canyon?? I'm looking forward to Jim W. and/or TDE putting together a track event for the DFW group, of which i would hope to see you. :) Here is a link to Eagles Canyon: http://www.eaglescanyonraceway.com/ It looks very nice to me, with pleasant elevation changes, long straights, and great turns. I did my first ever track event at Motorsport Ranch and loved it; just not sure about it after the new track changes. just my $.02. :D Kristen |
For gosh sakes,
What does a girl know about Racing? Shouldn't there be a filter to keep them from posting on "All Racing Talk"? K, you know I'm pulling your leg, you drove away from Tulsa while I pushed... Bruce, I contacted Wilwood and asked them about what pad I should upgrade to for the track. I got the more agressive pads (front only), installed them myself (easy!) , and wow, what a difference! Their opinion is we don't need 6 piston calipers, factory is fine - the car's just don't weigh enough. Slotted helps cooling more than drilled. Not as cool looking, but performance only. I also redirected my footbox cooling ducts to the brakes for fresh air cooling. Good luck and I'll see you in my rear view at Motorsport!  |
Kristen,
I looked at EC and they just weren't ready yet. I like MSR and what they do is run "sessions" every 30 minutes. There will be a bike session, open wheel session and a sports car session - depending on what type of cars are there. You end up with 30 min to 1 hour between runs, and that is usually just about right to let your car cool some and grab a drink. About 4 really hard runs and your usually about worn out anyway. I want to do EC when I get a chance. If I really like it I might join there also - you never know. MM - yea I need to change my pads and maybe brake rotors also. I am game for a track day anywhere, anytime. I was supposed to go today and ended up havig to take care of some business this morning. TOOOO hot now! B |
All I can say is WOW. Went to the track yesterday with my Viper and my newly modded Cobra. The Cobra had new Hoosier slicks and a new rear anti-sway bar. All I can say is it was like driving a different car. It was like on rails, no leaning, hooking about as hard as I wanted to hit the turns. I was only passed twice all day - by a Porsche GT3 and turbo Miata that was fast as heck.
I believe once I get some better coil overs and upgrade the brakes a little it will be hard to beat. The Viper still handles better, but the improvement on the Cobra is just short of unbelievable. |
One more thing everyone needs to be aware of. If you gonna track your car - even for the occasional track day - make sure you have a Road Race oil pan. They can be bought for about any motor used in our Cobras for less than $300, and they will insure good oil pressure through the hardest corners. Basically they are baffled inside and have a special pickup to keep the oil from sloshing around. I found out this weekend my Viper does not have one - did not hurt anything but I could have if I was not paying attention to the gauges.
|
I upgraded my rear sway bar too and went to poly bushings. Big difference. Haven't dipped into the Hoosier slicks yet, but several regular track drivers swear by them as being a large difference-maker.
|
I need new bushings- do you like the new poly ones Miles??
I also want Rob to check my sway bar and my brake situation. I wish i knew how; was confident in my ability (lack of) to do some of it myself. :JEKYLHYDE oh, and Miles, yes I DROVE away from Hallett!!! I really liked Motorsport Ranch. It was my 'first official' track day, with TDE. Sept., 04. It was hot as hell. Bruce- did you encounter any awkward curves or elevation changes at the track? I had just HEARD it wasn't so great for Cobra's anymore with the new changes. it sounds like you had a great time! oh and Miles- I can pop up on ANY THREAD you might be scrolling around on, so LOOK OUT!! :p :p :D I am really READY for a new track event! Will they EVER get Eagle's Canyon finished??? **) And, what about this new one out my way?? I had heard it was in Wills Point, but heard just last night it was going to be in a different location?? David has offered to buy me a membership. :) :) whaddya thunk?? ;) K |
The latest on EC is end of September. Stay tuned.

Miles,
Do you think Kristen is picking on you? Don't forget to remind her that you drove away from Hallett (in your tow vehicle). Let me know when the new track is open I want to be there. Clois |
Kristen,
There is supposed to be elevation changes - we are not flat tracking (just kidding). The 1.7 course does not have a lot of elevation changes, the 1.3 does. When they tie them together to make the 3.1 it is even more fun. MM - if you going to run the track with any regularity - you gotta have slicks. |
Ok, after having to spend a little time on my motor :(, I am back into it. I have the big brake kit ordered. What suspension you running? I have the single adjustable Aldens and they are crap. Looking at some KW, and maybe Penske - what have you had good luck with?

For all you Texas racing folks, go check out our new track being built down here in Austin Driveway Austin (512) 971-9100 . I JUST noticed we have the site up now, and it even has my picture...Executive Management | Drupal aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh...LOL
I built my Cobra down there during 2006-2007 and have used the current 'short course' a lot to break in the engine and test for leaks...:). The track has elevation changes (we even have our own 'corkscrew'), F1 standard, built to run 'through the trees' like European GP courses, we even have a fishing lake for the family. Different concept from Motorsports Ranch, and THERE WILL BE NO MOTORCYCLES ALLOWED! Glyn |
