Coolant & catch can questions
I'm in the process of installing a catch can and replacing the anti-freeze to be able to put the car on the track. Several questions have come up:
Royal Purple water additive label states "Do not use distilled water in an aluminum radiator. Redline Water wetter has no similar warning. Is this a problem? Use tap water??? Catch can from Summit racing has no vent. If I close the drain valve, it seems the can will pressurize & not accept any overflow, leave the drain open & it serves no purpose, what's the deal?? Thoughts & opinions welcome |
Coolant Pressure
Your pressure should be on the other side of the Pressure Cap on the expansion tank. Keep the petcock closed.

The summit can has a small hole in it to let the air out.

What about the "distilled water" in an aluminum radiator?? I hadn't hear that before. Any thoughts......

I am interested in this too because I had to replace a radiator due to hydrostatic errosion of the aluminium tank. I was told to only use distilled water. Are there any experts out there that can address this issue?

I received an E-mail from Royal Purple, it was their product "Royal Ice" that had the distilled water warning. Their reason makes sense to me; Distilled water has all minerals removed, making it "starved" for minerals, thus corrosive to aluminum. They recommend tap water.
Now, what's the correct plumbing for a catch can?? I've seen a number of installations with different configurations. Some seem to be pressure vessels, others just an open container to catch a bit of water, and some just plain don't make sense. Anybody know what is "right" ? |
we ran our can with the inlet in the bottom and the cap vents it on top pretty simple..WB3

hey Clois some guys run a sacrafishal anode in the rad to keep it from corroding anything aluminum,on a side note our motorcycle company KTM suggested changing fluid every year. the blocks are all aluminum ,to keep corrosion to a min iv always done it .I even herd the guys with the old aluminum slant 6s loosing ther engines because of note changing the fluid corroded from the inside out.hhmm i think il change mine now!!!WB3:eek:

Manufacturers of Al. rads. recommend distilled water because alot of tap water contains Chlorine and that is VERY corrosive. If you don't use anti-freeze, you need to use an anti-corrosive additive. A sacrificial zinc anode in place of the drain plug is a great idea. Pick one up at any boat supply place. Another good idea is to make sure your rad. is grounded so there is no stray current in your cooling system.

Take a look at Evans NPG+ waterless coolant. I just installed it in my car, and so far it's working fine.
