Where & What To Buy for Racing Helmet & Gloves?
I looked through past threads, but didn't find much. The NorCal Shelby Club had a person from a racing supplies company speak at a recent meeting, but now I can't find that info either.
I want to pass tech inspection for the "yellow" or novice/beginner group. Thanks. |

You need a copy of there track rules
Rodknock Depending on the track, is what you will need to wear. Parade laps at slow speed, only require shoulder and lap belts. Nomex helmet will be for sure. The rules will tell you if you can get away with an open face helmet or full face helmet. If you are going to do this more than a couple of times, getting the correct thing will save you money down the road. Full helmet and Nomex driver suit. Shoes too. Jegs, Summit, Imop, and others sell couple setups. Side note that most of the guys even on parade laps have there driving suits on minus gloves and helmets. IMO it's smart and even looks cool.%/;):D Rick L. I wear my Jacket on parade laps in my car.

Ditto on the rules per Ricks advice. You need to check Schnell ratings for helmets as they are rated for multiple impacts as in bouncing off roll cages a couple of times.

The track would be Thunderhill. The Yellow group requires that drivers must wear long pants, long sleeve cotton shirts, and gloves (preferably Nomex). Is there a popular helmet and gloves that people buy and wear? I'm not trying to blaze any new trails. |

Last time I was there, Goodie's Speed Shop in San Jose had a selection of Nomex gloves in the store and I think they have helmets, too. They match any online price you can find.

I know it is not close to San Jose but Summit in Sparks, NV sells a complete line of various racing suits, gloves, shoes, arm restraints, etc. and they would have it at your door the next day. But, if Goodies will match internet prices that might be the ticket!

All good info...just to add to it, if you plan to or even think you may want to go further than the yellow run group, plan now for it and buy accordingly.........
Down here where I race, the helmets are good for 10 years, seat belts 5 and starting Jan. 1st 2010, we all have to wear an approved head/neck restraint!!!!!!!!! My seat belts and helmet expire this coming year, so they'll have to be replaced, but my suit is good to go.... If you plan to get a fire suit, look at the rating on it, they vary a lot...also the TTP rating...... Above all, buy the best safety equipment you can afford, this is not a place to cut corners........... David |

This is all good advice... I'd like to add that you should purchase a "donut" or helmet collar to wear around your neck to limit the side-to-side, back'n forth movement of the helmet; kinda like a HANS device, but less expensive. Also, when you buy glvoes, buy a bright color like yellow or orange. You will use your hands to signal other drivers and corner workers, etc... and having bright colored gloves will help these folks see your hand signals better. Have fun, Randy... |
