Rear end assembly
Hello,
I have a week off of work and I think I finally have everything to start putting the rear together. I had a couple of questions before i get started though. 1. How do you press in the ten bolts for the housing? Is there a special tool? 2. Is there a measurement that i need to know when I get the bearings pressed onto the axles, such as how far the bearing needs to be from the back of the flange. I'm using drum brakes. 3. Where should I drill and tap for the vent? Anywhere on top of the housing in particular it should be? Any other tips you can think of would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays |
the answer to question #3 i put mine in the center of the left hand side axle tube....
question #2 your macnine shop will/should know how far to press on the bearing.... question#1 i put the bolt in from the inside and put a piece of tube over the bolt and ran a nonlock nut down on the bolt until it was seeted in the housing or you can use a stack of washers |

There are no special tools to press in the studs. Just get a couple spare nuts and flat washers. So you don't bottom out the nut put a washer or two on first and drive them in with a rathet or air gun. Use some sealer on the splines, mine leaked a little from the stud.I pressed my bearings on myself at work.Install the retainer plate FIRST then press the bearing and collar on untill it stops. I drilled and tapped the vent hole on the left side closer to the differential. Do this before you install the axles and diff. What brakes are you using? I went with the willwood 12" disks. I hope this helps.Richie
