rear axle issue
I have a 9 inch with drum brakes. Right now I have a rolling chassis, no engine or trans. I can push it backwards with no problems. When I try to push it forward it won't move. With the wheels in the air I can turn the center pinion and the wheels move forward and backward very easily. I had a mechanic look at it and he said it was the brake shoes I checked and they aren't rubbing on the drum. I'm just wondering why I can't push the chassis forward. Should I just continue with the build and figure it out later.

Drum brakes can cause that problem. Why not pull the drums and try it?

I pulled the wheels and drums off but if i grab the axle that is sticking out it won't turn forward. But when i turn the pinion forward and backward both axles move fine. So I figure if I'm in gear (I don't have the engine and trans in yet) I'll be fine but if I'm in neutral I'm going to have a problem right?

Leave your brake shoes off and mount the wheel on one side and see if it will turn. I bet it does.
Loose the brake shoes. Go to eBay and search for 9" rear disc brakes. They are cheap. |
You can back off the adjuster nut on the drum shoes and see if that helps. -- make sure all your brake parts are attached to the backing plate.

Did you check the front brakes?
If you have the front brakes togeather the pads may be holding the rotors. See if the front spin free. Rearend spins in the air, Houston we have another problem.:rolleyes:;) Rick L. Ps the other 2 things is to just remove the drums for now. Last does this have a parking brake and is it working? It may be too tight and causing this problem. If all else fails hit it with the tow truck, it will move.:eek::rolleyes:;)

The front wheels turn no problem. I have tried to turn the rear wheels in the air with no drums on the brakes and it still doesn't move forward. I bought the center section off of ebay and I put it in myself. Could I have screwed something up during install to make it not turn from the wheels? Thanks for your help

Is possible you have axles that are too long and bind in the 3rd member or the wrong spline on the axle ends. Remove the axles to start.Start with 3rd member, see if you can spin this throught the pinion end by hand, if yes, Check each axle for the bearing to spin on the shaft. If this is ok, Put the axle in loose, see if you can spin the axle engaged in the carrier. If yes tighten down 1 side and retest. I think the axle will lockup the carrier and the mounting bolts are tighten. If it's not this you have a bad 3rd member. Back lash is too tight, should be rocking of .004".012" of clearance between pinion gear and ring gear. It may be as simple and resetting up the 3rd member. Good luck Rick

there are short and long brake shoes if you have them switched it could cause what your talking about.

I finally got fed up with it and removed the whole assembly and brought it to my mechanic. Hopefully I didn't screw things up too bad.
