Rear End Growling Noise
I was wondering if anyone with a 9" Ford Posi rear end ever experience a growling noise and vibration when turning right from a stop position.
It doesn't do it when I am rolling and turn right. It does not do it when turning left. Oil level is good and correct additive is in the oil. Looking for suggestions Thanks Jim |

Axle bearing most likely " Just pop the axle out and check the bearing for wear. This
Is a general maintenance item anyway " 4-5 years and they are junk I just did mine in March. Just take the axles to a machine shop as they need to be pressed on. When you pop the axle out really try and jiggle that bearing if it goes up and down pivot It's junk. Side to side means over the winter. |
My car has been on the road since 2001.
I want to say it has always growled a bit on right turns from a stop. It is just now it seems a lot worse than before. If it were axle bearings why wouldn't left hand turns be the same? Jim |

Could be the clutches if it is limited slip. Have you checked your fluid level? Did you add friction additive to the oil if you have limited slip?

Is not constant, seems like you have neglected the rearend as mst people do. Spend Saturday taking it apart. Clean it , fresh fluid , limi slip additive Grab a cheap dial indicator if you don't have and check some clearances. Have you ever pulled the pumpkin on your rear yet? It's not hardt all you Just need a good jack to pull it onto. Those axles are coming out anyway " might as well freshen it up. |
I had something similar with my clutches. The disks were worn on the one side, and not so much worn on the other. When you made a RH turn, the car would almost jump as if it had a spool and growl. It didn't happen when making a LH turn.
Replaced the clutches and all was well. |
Well,just went for a ride after draining the diff case. Drained out around two quarts.
I know I put in two quarts and the tube of limited slip friction additive 13 years ago. I put in a tube of the friction additive and two quarts of Lucas 80-90 wt gear oil. I guess I should have changed it some time ago because I went for a pretty aggressive ride and turning right from a stop now is silent, NO GROWLING. Any idea on how often one should drain and add new oil for your diff case. Jim Any idea what is a good interval |
