Windwing install
I drilled and tapped my windscreen frame. It is much sturdier than using the existing screws. Not hard to do because it's brass.

I tapped and drilled my existing holes in the brass insert and installed heli-coils. I didn't even think about drilling the pillar part of the windshield frame. Your idea is probably a lot easier than what I did, because I had to disassemble the glass from the frame that surrounds it. Oh well, I'm a big dumbie sometimes. John |

I'm preparing to install mine as well. Did you tap them fine thread or coarse, #10 or #8 dia? slithering |
Don't know for sure what the thread size is but I can say they are the same thread size as the windshield frame screws.

For those of you with a soft top...... I have to take the wind wings off in order to get the soft top on. Aside from living with it, has anyone done anything to correct the issue so that the soft top can be installed with the windwings in place? The 'snap' that holds the soft top to the windscreen will not snap down into place with the wind wings on the car.

Roscoe, I was just reading your dyno article in Kit Car this morning while on the 'throne'. Did you ever run a holley on that motor? If so, what do you think of the Demon by comparison?

Never ran a holley on it. The holley is a good carb but I think the BG carbs are a bit better quality. I've heard of some that have had problems with both. The BG Demon will take pretty much all holley parts, gaskets, jets, etc. Another carb that is good, but a bit more $, is the AED. Nice carb. Roscoe |
Windwings Install
I did what Roscoe did. I drilled and tapped holes in the windshield upright posts. I believe I used #10 NC screws. I used stainless screws and went right through the posts and secured the other side with stainless acorn nuts.

Word of caution... If the screws you use are even a wee bit too long, what could occur is that the screw will touch and then push into the windshield glass.
What happens then is that the windsheild will either crack right then and there, or, will crack some time thereafter (like on a real hot day when the glass expands or vibration sets the glass against the screw). You want the length of the screw to be just long enough to give you good bite and purchase in the frame but not too long to be near the glass. You have to be carefull when drilling too I would imagine. |

What we're talking about is installing the windwings in a fashion other than what is prescribed. The prescribed installation calls for removing screws that hold the windshield to the posts and replacing them with longer screws to accommodate the thickness of the windwing mounting blocks. Instead of doing it that way; drill new holes to the rear of where the windshield mounting holes are and tap the holes and mount the windwing blocks using the new holes. Since the windshield posts are tapered from the top to the bottom, there is plenty of room to drill the new holes without it interfering with the windshield. |

Wings
I used slotted head stainless screws, but I like the idea of using Allen heads. Anyway, heres a few pics.

Nice job guys. How did you all know I just ordered my windwings and was wondering how to install them. Thank you for all the wonderful information. I really like the alan head idea. Has anybody had any luck with the top latch not interfering with the windwings, not that I put the top on much, but just food for thought. Thanks again.

Actually you do not need to tap if you drill through the back of the post like Tony did.Just drill through and secure with nice nut. chuck

I didn't use a nut I just put loctite on the screws and made sure they were the proper length.
