Question Ford 460 & Tremic TKO in an A&C Cobra

I am taking possession of my A&C Cobra kit in August and was originaly leaning toward a 351 stroked to 427, but After checking stats. and prices I am now thinking about a Ford Performance crate 460 and tremic TKO 5 speed. Does anyone have any advice or info on positives or negitives with this drivetrain setup in an A&C. The ford engine has aluminum heads, intake and waterpump so that drops the weight a bit. let me know what I could be getting into. Any advice would be appreciated Thanks, Sam

Sam,
I have a 460/550HP Ford Crate motor hooked up with a Tremec 600 5 speed trans. I would reccommend this combination if you love the sound of a big block and your just planning to drive the car on the street. If your headed to any kind of a track, I'd opt for something lighter in the front end. One word of caution if you purchase a crate motor. Spend a little extra cash before you put it in the car and have someone go through it to make sure everything is proper. Have heard stories of bearings getting wiped after 2,000 miles and cams flattening out. Believe Ford now offers a one year warranty which could protect you.

I prefer the small blocks. They give you enough horsepower, they are easy to work on, performance parts are plentiful and the cost is lower than a BB. Weight and balance are certainly an issue also. Remember we are only talking about a car that weighs in at around 2300 lbs. You don't need the BB power to launch it into space.

Whatever you decide check out Engine Factory. They dyno their engines and guarantee them. They also stand behind their product and are great people to deal with. They are in NJ.

Gary thanks for the input,

I plan to just do a lot of cruzin, some street pounding, and have fun with the car. I may take it to the local drag strip just for time trials to see what it will do, but no serious racing. By the way, If you dont mind telling me, what rear gear ratio and rear tire size are you running. Thanks again, Sam

Here are some pictures of an A&C with a Ford crate 460 and a tremec TKOII: (ground clearance was a problem, as you can see from the pictures, but the new A&C hoods have taller hood scoops, so you may be able to raise the motor a bit.

Question 460 / 5 speed Tremic in A&C

Rob,
From the look of your pictures you have done a lot of the leg work I will have to do if I decide to go with a 460. Would it be possible to get a list of the part #s you used (bellhousing, throughout bearing, oilpan & pickup, front pullies, you know "everything". Even if we could talk on the phone would be a great help, I have a lot of questions. Thanks, Sam

Nice color! Where'd you get that color and what color blue is it? Looks an awful lot like mine.

A&C did mine in a gelcoat of Honda Prelude Eternal Blue.

i just recently bought a 460 and was hopeing someone could tell me what would be a great setup to go with to produce alot of hp to run and cruise with anything over heating

The Jon Kasse designed SCJ heads will produce plenty of torque for you.
Ovoiding overheating is a simple matter of having a sufficient cooling system.
Use an appropriate radiator, a shrouded fan and good water pump and you shouldn't have any problems. Mine will go up to about 205 until the fan comes on then down to 190-180 depending on whether I sit still or am moving.

I agree with Roscoe on using a small block. The weight and placement of the engine in this small of a car, and the way it then handles is an issue to consider. The first time I got caught in the rain in my car (with a SB 302) it was a whole new experience on how the vehicle handled. I was driving real cautious until I got back into the garage! This is America, do what you want, just my .02.
