I've tried this before myself and had to have it sent to an upholstery shop.
I was told to try some 3M spray adhesive for metal/vinyl. It came right off. I tried several times but couldn't get it to stick. I did follow the directions. 
What the upholstery shop used was a mystery....but I can tell you that it was sprayed on....and it was yellow and somewhat thick.
