Side Pipe or Header Cracking
I have been looking at pictures of side pipe mounting for cobras and also hearing people say they need to be rubber mounted or they will crack. From what I can see in the pictures posted many of you have hard mounted your pipes. I personally dont like to see the pipes rattling back and forth any time you give the throttle a blip but I dont want to be going through headers or pipes.
I know Roscoe has put many miles on his car and I have never heard him talk about cracking or breaking exhaust parts. From the pictures of his set up I dont see that they are rubber mounted. Just wondering what experiences you all are having? Thanks, Aaron |

This configuration in comes in several different styles. It allows the pipes to move, but keeps them stable. A thicker tongues will keep the movement to a minimum. Any muffler shop will have a book with all the options. |
Side pipe cracking
Even if your engine is virtually solid mounted or urethane bushes etc its still a good idea to fabricate a bracket from your sidepipe to a firm square or round rubber mount, on the chassis. The little round mini type accessory exhaust mounts are not strong enough, exhaust shops have bigger squares items or do what I do and find mounts at a breakers yard, I used Jaguar round mounts on my first cobra!
The operative word is "stress" and by fitting a suitably engineered rubber mount will help your pipes last longer! |
Its Alwayes A Good Idea To Put Rubber Isolaters Any Where Your Body Touches Metal, Or Your Exhaust As Well. Its Also A Good Idea To Put A Rubber Gasket Where Your Steering Colume Is Mounted As Well.

My sidepipes are mounted directly to the chassis. Early on I did have the forward 1/4-20 bolt on the sidepipes break. I re-tapped it to 5/16 and never had a problem since. http://www.priveye.com/cobra/Side1.jpg |
SPF's come standard with a rubber isolator between the bracket off the end of the side pipe and the underside of the car.
Even with isolators, my brackets broke at 12K miles. No big deal. Small scrap piece of metal and a little welding fixed it. I've heard that newer cars have a better and beefier design. |
I Fabricated A Bracket And Welded It To The Side Pipes And Made Them Lower Than The Frame About 1/4 Inch And Put Rubber Inbetween The Pipe Bracket And The Frame It Works Great. I Will Take A Pic And Try And Post It.

I'd like to see a picture. Did you tap the frame or run a bolt throught the frame?

Were those brackets with the pin that slides through the middle? Used on the over the axle pipes? If those are what you are talking about. Muffler shops now carry a square bracket with a pin that slides through it. I will try to post a pic tomorrow. |
