Transmission repair in Phx area?
Who do you recommend for transmission repair in the general Phx area?
My T-5 5th gear is way to high for my driving habits. It also has a hard time hitting 5th gear without a slight grind at highway speeds. |

It sounds like you may need to change the gear ratio in the rear-end also. I have had 3:55 and 3:73's they will both make 5th gear more useable.
The 3:73's will make 1st gear really short. You may want to give Gordon Levy a call, I think he has a few options to upgrade your transmission. |
I had a clutch, aluminum flywheel and new trans put in at SVC Motorsports. They did a very nice job and took care to do the job correctly. They also put a TruTrac in my Ford 8.8 with precision.

I'm guessing you have a very high, numerically low rear end. To verify..
Mark the tire and drive shaft. count the revolutions the drive shaft makes for one revolution of the tire. This will give you the ratio. 3 1/2 turns is a 3.27 rear, 3 and 1/2 turns 3.50 etc. Once you know this and the tranny gearing you can then decide what you need to work on. Mike |

If you don't know the ratio of the diff, put in 3.55 and see what comes out. You can change any of the input data you need to. It also gives you a way to determine where you will be if you change from? to? |

OK,
Thanks to Mike and Danr I have more info. My rear end must be a 3.55 as the drive shaft rotated 3 1/2 times per 1 rotate of the rear tire. Now using Danrs chart I see I have at least a 0.64 5th gear as my calculations were close in 5th gear at 2000 rpms (75 mph or so) My rear tires are 255-50-16 which are a 26" tire. In 5th gear going 75 MPH on GPS I was doing 2000 RMPs. Things are not adding up 100% with my calculations. |
THat sounds pretty close to what the calculator says. What is it that you are having a problem with? Sounds like a TKO with a .64 fifth gear. That makes sense.. unless you bought it from Anthem Motors.. before they went out of business .. then no one really knows.

I have two complaints with the tranny.
1. It grinds when shifting from 4th to 5th at highway speeds unless I double clutch it, if I double clutch it it shifts perfect.:confused::confused::confused: 2. 5th gear is way to tall, it feels like it is guts less at 65 mph in 5th gear and it is reving to high to cruise in 4th gear at that speed. |

Remember 5th is just a cruise gear. I have a 3.27 rear and the same tranny as you. Once you get used to it and the motor is not lugging 5th is fine. If you need to pass give it some gas or down shift. I do not remember what my RPM's are for the mph you are talking about but I know it's lower. If you have to have the tranny gone through then you can change to a .8? fifth. Mike |
Dan, I can understand fixing the grinding but with all the trips we AZ Cobras take you will miss the low 5th gear. I have a .67 fifth linked to a 3.73 and I with I had a 3.55 rear. Fix what is broken and be patient. You don't need 5th driving around town.
