Side pipe flange weld cracked
The weld on both side pipe flanges that the supporting bracket attaches to is cracked. I'm referring to the bracket that attaches to the 2" square cross member at the rear of the foot boxes. A common problem I guess. Lots of clanking going on. Anyone here locally have the same problem, and can you tell me what's the best fix here in town ?

Scotty, Any weld shop should be able to fix it. If you can't find a place, let me know and I'll get you the names of some shops..

Make sure that the rear mount will allow some fore-and-aft movement of the sidepipe. If it cannot move, the expansion and contraction of the sidepipe will try to pry the bracket off the pipe. Depending upon how your mount is configured, slotting the mounting hole may provide the needed movement.

Are you talking about where it connects to the side pipe? If so My drivers side cracked and removed itself from the pipe. I had it welded back on. No problem.

The metal on the pipe is very thin not giving a lot of real weld area. Since this bracket is somewhat hidden, consider making a new tab that is wider where it attaches to the pipe. That way, you can much more weld length.
Or just reweld it. :3DSMILE:

On the MKI's, FFR had the builder install two rubber bushings ( they came from the donor car) on the bracket to frame mount. That took care of the vibration.

My MK111 has the 2 rubber bushings at the frame also. I dropped the pipes off to a welder in Mesa today. He's going to clean up the existing welds, and slide a large plate over the flange ( a small cut out ) and then weld the whole plate in place with weld plugs. My heat shields should cover the whole area..........I hope ! And thanks guys for your input.
