I think I found the problem

Can you guess what it was???
This is what I found when I took off the p/s valve cover.

Didn't seem to have done any damage. Just lucky I guess.

jhv48 05-04-2010 06:11 PM

I'll bet the spark plug wire was shorting out on the spare rocker arm.

DWRAT 05-04-2010 06:25 PM

Did the threads pull out of the head?
You may need to install a helicoil in that hole.

Nice find by the way.

Yup, that'll do it.

...your throttle body is missing...?

Check the threads in the head carefully. The stud may screw into the head, but the hole may be elongated. Cross your fingers.

dave from mesa 05-04-2010 11:56 PM

What happened was the place that did the heads only torqued the studs to about 20-25 lbs. Edelbrock said 45#'s. Not even close.
That one just unscrewed and fell out. Not one was tight and none had thread lock/anti-sieze or anything on it.

Dave,

You got a break there that it didn't cause any major damage. Glad you caught it in time.

Amazing. Simply amazing. Dave you've got to be one of the luckiest people I know. Anyone else would have gotten a rocker arm sideways, busted the valve keepers and sucked a valve. If it turns out that you need to thread and helicoil the head, let me know. I'll come and watch this weekend.**):cool:

You must have REALLY LOUD:eek::eek: side pipes:LOL::LOL:

Guess you found the cause of the loud lifters too.

I assume you'll not need to change an injector.

Glad to hear you found the problem.

dave from mesa 05-05-2010 12:30 PM

Lucky? Beyond lucky considering how far I might have traveled with it off. Half way to Seligman to Kingman and back. Got any idea how far that is?
Car Nut
Didn't change the injector. Since they were all loose it makes a diff in how quiet it sounds now.
Runs fine now thanks to Mike B who I helped tighten all of them up.

trularin 05-05-2010 12:44 PM

Air in the tires?

mikiec 05-05-2010 01:21 PM

I told you the valve train should be quiet.

I think you need to make the rte66 run all over again. :) :):)

Who did the heads Dave? ;)

Mike Brasfield 05-07-2010 09:04 PM

B&B Machine shop in mesa. I called the Mgr and complained. I have switched machine shops due to the problem caused by their poor workmanship. The happy ending was there is no damage and it just take an hour or so to make it work again. New "handle" for Dave. LUCKY DAVE.

Never trust a place called 'B&B' :JEKYLHYDE
