Superformance Cobra Wiring Work Needed
I am looking for referrals for a reputable Phoenix area repair shop/builder that has experience working on Superformance Cobras in addition to working with the factory for obtaining parts. The engine harness and much of the IP harness is burned and needs to be replaced. The entire electrical system needs to be diagnosed for failure root cause. Thanks!

Check out Hot Rods by Dean and ask for Charlie.

The wiring is actually pretty simple. Contact Blas (he posts here) and get a copy of the amazing SPF wiring diagram he created. It accurately and completely lays out the entire wiring, including component description and p/n's, wire sizes and color codes.
If you have a decent understanding of electrical circuits, you can replace all wiring yourself. All components are available at any good auto parts store. You will probably want to go to Hillbank for the wire to maintain the original color coding. Using one, I have made a lot of changes to my car's wiring; eliminated some unused circuits, rerouted the alternator charging wire, replaced the ammeter with a voltmeter, simplified the starter circuit, etc. Do you belong to SCOF? A lot of good info there. If you were closer, I would be glad to help you. Rodger |
Thanks for the feedback! I spoke to Darrel at Hot Rods By Dean. They were also referred by Superformance out of Irvine. Very good conversation, and of course they have Charlie who is familiar with the product. As for SCOF, yes I am a member but I wanted to be sure that this was being repaired and diagnosed by those with a better knowledge of vehicle electrical systems than I. Thanks for the offer Rodger!

I ordered all three of the wiring diagrams from Blas,
SPFWiringDiagrams@Comcast.net. I had three SPF that fell into the three catagories. I was amazed at how much differance there is in the wiring diagrams. It will make your wiring job go so much smoother for you or the people you have do the work. My two bits. |
Charlie at Hot Rods by Dean will take care of you. I don't know where you live but they can help. Diagnosis of cause is critical for repair. Blas has a large fuse you can connect to protect your dash wiring if that is where it started.

Thanks again for the suggestions! SPF1557 is now temporarily residing at Hot Rods By Dean so that the repairs can begin. A big thank you to both Dean and Charlie who loaded up their truck and trailer and made the trek from Deer Valley to Chandler to personally pick up the car and take it back to the shop. Awesome! My plan was to rent a U-haul trailer but they offered. Everything was handled very professionally and it was a pleasure to meet them both. I look forward to working with them.

Your car is in good hands.

You will go a long way before you find anyone who will do such a good job and be as personable as Charlie and Dean. I agree with Mike. Your car is in excellent hands.

The car was completed and picked up from Hot Rods By Dean Oct 11th, right before a long business trip so I am just now getting back with everyone on the results. In one word, "Outstanding!". Thanks to everyone here on the forum for great advice. Charlie not only addressed the electrical issues that was the reason the car needed repair, but he also pointed out several other minor issues and repairs that needed attention and completed them. As for the major electrical work, everything was done with attention to detail and met my high standards for perfection. Charlie must be a prefectionist too based on how he evenly re-taped the repaired harness section as original with clips and all!
This is a car that I assembled eight years ago, however, it has never been out of my possession as I have always performed mechanical repairs and maintenence. It goes a long way in saying that having another set of eyes look things over from Charlie's level of experience with these cars is well worth it! They were very up front with suggestions like changing out the ammeter to a voltmeter, checking all fastener torques, engine and trans mounts, flusing fluids and providing part numbers for some of the replacement parts so that I can still be a do-it-yourselfer. From picking up the car, to doing an a excellent "major" electrical repair to having the car ready to go without a blemish is everything you hope for in a repair shop. The whole team at Hot Rods By Dean did a super job and gets my top recommendation! |
