Two questions
I'm not sure on how to adjust the clutch cable , the clutch pedal seems to be letting out higher than when I first bought it , 5800 miles now. The second question is , does 5-30 run hotter than 5-20 syn. oil, I use Castrol. It seems that since I changed oil the 5-30 is hotter, 220-240, than the 5-20 210-220. The water temp is 190-210, any thoughts.

I'm not an FFR expert but I've seen a clutch adjustment on many FFR's on the footbox where the cable comes out. Has a knurled ring that allows you to lengthen or shorten the
cable. Does your car have that? On the cooling, what temp thermostat are you using? Larry |
The cable has a large adjustable nut , should I turn and see what happens. As for the thermostat I think its at 190, but it seems that the 5-30 weight oil makes the engine run hotter, if true should I go back to a thinner oil.
|
Sure, try the adjustment nut and see what happens. Maybe mark where you start first.
I don't know if the 30W oil runs hotter or not. Could be a syn vs standard thing too. Might also have something to do with how hot it's been of late. I don't think it's too high though. Are you using an oil cooler? Larry |
No oil cooler,it seems that once the oil gets hot it takes longer to cool it down. I drove around the area where I live, 35 - 45 mph and it heated up fast, than went onto a 55 mph road and it didn't cool down very much, water temp was 190 -210, but oil temp was over 220 for quite a while, any thoughts, change thermostat maybe.
|
220 is a normal temperature for oil.
A 190 t-stat begins to open at 190. Water temperature of 190-210 is normal for that t-stat. |
If you have a injected engine with a computer control, you may not be able to change the thermostat. The engine has to operate in range set up by the computer.
If you don't have a set up like that and no computer, you could lower the therm temp with a different one. Larry |
If the knob is on the engine side of the footbox it is the clutch adjustment dial. sounds like your clutch is running out of material. Just like brakes, if you have to add break fluid your break pads are getting smaller. If you clutch is acting different it may be due to loosing cutch material. Turn the dial and try the pedal then try again. On the original mustang clutch you would lift the clutch pedal up with your toe to adjust. good luck

We put a 160 thermostat in our car. All that does is let it open at a lower temp. Car still runs in the 190-200 range. It did get to 210 at Heber but that was after 1-11/2 miles of being in the parade. That's as hot as it got so not a bad thing.

Running too cold can be tough on an engine. Although having that issue in Arizona seems like a joke at this point, but if the oil doesn't get warm enough, condensation can build in the crank case and the oil can get sludgy. ?? is that a word?
|
Hey Dan , if you can make-up a word and we understand it , I guess it's a word. My question was does syn. oil that is thicker run hotter that thinner syn. oil, or any oil thin or thick.
|
If I recall my physics, more viscous fluids are harder to heat up initially, but will retain more heat, longer than less viscous fluids.
|
Any difference in temperature between 5-20 and 5-30 should be miniscule. If you really have a difference of 20 degrees, then you have a different issue than the difference in viscosity.
It ain't the oil. |
Skully,
Now that you have about 6K miles under your belt with her, now is a good time for a general check up. A thorough shake down would include checking bolts for proper torque, check all fluid levels and a good performance tune. If injected with ECM control then you are limited on what or how you can make changes. The clutch cable is already dealt with. I like a 180* T-stat but something as simple as a bad radiator cap could cause her to run a bit hotter. A performance tune would find optimum ignition timing, verify timing tab/pointer and check or set air fuel ratios and more. Some of these issues can make engine run a little hot although I doubt oil viscosity would add 20 plus * to average run temp. Jeff C |
Thanks everybody, where is a good place to take the car for a performance tune-up.

I checked with Jeff. I keep waiting for him to check back.
|
And the emails and phone calls have not worked?? Dan please consider this your official ... check back:D:D
I see you are still logged on so give me a call when you see this. Jeff C |
Jeff, Right now I'm in Hoogeveen Netherlands. I'll check with you when I get back to the Land of the Big Mac. Sometime next week. Thanks,
